Speculation season is here.

The articles guessing Regional Rankings, D2 Playoff contenders and Harlon Hill shortlists will roll out of every corner like Ferris State running through the inflatable Bulldog's mouth.

I thought I would throw my hat in the ring, but put a new spin on it. We're going to measure the top three Harlon Hill Trophy candidates, but we're going to do it by banquet chairs.

It's the place where these athletes hope to end up, surrounded by friends and family, eating pork medallions smothered with onion gravy. Maybe there's a cousin there that you don't really like, but he's the first person that goes to give you a hug when you win.

Anyway, there are no real surprises below. These are three programs that have been in the national conversation for the last few years, and could very well find themselves winning other hardware in December.

1A. Wyatt Bower | QB, Ferris State

Banquet Chairs: 🪑🪑🪑🪑🪑 | 6–0 (FloCollege No. 1) • Super Region 3

The Resume:

  • 1,457 total offensive yards (1,086 passing, 371 rushing)
  • 15 total TDs (eight rush, seven pass)
  • Quarterback for the best team in the nation, two years running.

The Read:

Voters almost always favor quarterbacks for the No. 1 team in the nation, especially when that No. 1 team is back-to-back national champions and on a winning streak straight from the football gods.

If there is anything that will get in the way of Bower winning the trophy, it's that Ferris blows teams out, and most of the time he sits in the fourth quarter.

1B. Andrew Miller | FB/RB, Harding

Banquet Chairs: 🪑🪑🪑🪑🪑 | 6–0 (FloCollege No. 2) • Super Region 4

The Resume:

  • 824 rushing yards
  • 137.3 rushing yards per game (6.15 yards per rush)
  • 14 rushing touchdowns
  • Running back for the second-best team in the nation, two years running.

The Read:

Miller has accumulated 4,442 career rushing yards and 64 rushing touchdowns, placing him second on Harding's career lists in both categories. He had 229 rushing yards and four touchdowns against SE Oklahoma State, including an 88-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

The hesitation will come from living and dying with the flexbone and triple option. Miller is a product of the system. Will voters view him as that or an incredibly reliable and bulldozing fullback?

3. JayJay Jordan | RB, Slippery Rock

Banquet Chairs: 🪑🪑🪑🪑⚪ | 6–0 (FloCollege No. 6) • Super Region 1

The Resume:

  • 835 rushing yards on 98 carries
  • 8.52 yards per rush
  • 16 rushing touchdowns (18 total)

The Read:

In terms of scoring, Jordan is flirting with the likes of Danny Woodhead. He's a constant big-play threat, and has helped The Rock return to form after an off year. If anything blocks Jordan from advancing to the national ballot, it could be a crowded Super Region 1. Only two players from each super region advance to the national ballot, so Jordan could face competition from Kutztown's Judd Novak, JCSU's Parker McQuarrie and Frostburg State's Jordan Brooks.
