Oil, Sweat And Tears: FloCollege D2 Game Of The Week

There will be oil. There will be sweat. And somebody will be leaving in tears.

No. 14 Findlay is bringing its ironclad defense into Charger territory, where Hillsdale's high-powered offense and a quarterback fresh off a six-touchdown masterpiece await.

Two 5-1 teams, each fighting to keep its Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) title hopes alive. Neither intends to leave empty-handed.

Both teams enter Saturday at 5-1, and both have suffered their only defeat against the same opponent: undefeated Northwood.

Hillsdale nearly toppled the Timberwolves in a 10-7 defensive battle on Sept. 19, while Findlay fell 34-11 a week later. Now, with both programs riding two-game winning streaks, the Oilers and Chargers meet knowing another G-MAC loss could put the conference crown further out of reach.

WATCH

Hillsdale Brings The Firepower, Findlay Brings The Wall

Findlay's defense has spent six weeks making opposing offenses miserable. Hillsdale has spent those same six weeks lighting up scoreboards.

Hillsdale enters this game leading the all-time series 18-17-1, but Findlay has won four straight meetings to close the gap. A Hillsdale victory would end that streak and keep the Chargers in the G-MAC championship chase, while a win for Findlay would even the historic rivalry at 18 wins apiece.

Hillsdale's high-voltage offense:

  • 36.7 points per game
  • 433.5 total yards per game
  • 215.7 rushing yards per game

Findlay's ironclad defense:

  • 11.7 points allowed per game
  • 241.8 yards allowed per game
  • 67.7 rushing yards allowed per game

Something to note: Findlay just survived a 7-6 defensive slugfest against Ashland, holding the Eagles to 227 yards and zero touchdowns. Now the Oilers prepare for the G-MAC's highest-scoring offense in Hillsdale.

Six Touchdowns And Plenty Of Horsepower: Meet Eli Boyce

Hillsdale quarterback Eli Boyce enters Saturday after earning G-MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Boyce last weekend vs. Walsh:

  • 267 passing yards, 2 passing TDs
  • 133 rushing yards, 4 rushing TDs
  • 400 total yards, 6 touchdowns accounted for

Boyce has eight rushing touchdowns this season, while receiver Shea Ruddy has 29 catches for 418 yards and four scores.

Findlay has allowed just three rushing touchdowns all season.

If Boyce can break through that defense, the Chargers might finally break their four-game losing streak against the Oilers.

Findlay's Defense Has Backup

The Oilers aren't arriving in Hillsdale with defense alone.

Findlay's offensive weapons:

  • QB Chase Harrison: 1,148 passing yards, 12 TDs
  • RB Dominic Bennett: 393 rushing yards, 7.4 yards per carry
  • WR Jakar Williams: Scored the decisive touchdown against Ashland

First-year coach Tyler Johns has Findlay at 5-1, with the Oilers allowing fewer than 12 points per game.

But after scoring only seven against Ashland, Findlay's offense will need to bring more firepower against the Chargers.

How Can Findlay Or Hillsdale Catch Northwood In The G-MAC?

Northwood leads the G-MAC at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play, with Findlay, Hillsdale and Tiffin each at 3-1.

The road to the conference title for Findlay or Hillsdale:

  • Win Saturday: The winner improves to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
  • Get help: Northwood has already beaten both teams, so the Timberwolves must stumble elsewhere.
  • Watch the schedule: Northwood still faces Lake Erie, Ohio Dominican, Ashland, Thomas More and Walsh. Hillsdale hosts Tiffin on Oct. 24, while Findlay visits Tiffin on Nov. 14.
