No. 6 Grand Valley State vs No. 23 Michigan Tech Football Highlights | 2026 D2 Football4:02

If you tuned into any NCAA college football game this weekend, there’s a 5% chance that you witnessed a Top 25 team get upset (yes, I did the math). Division I schools led the way with five ranked upsets, while D2 and D3 had four each.

The games determined to be upsets were based solely on lower-ranked or unranked teams beating programs that are ranked higher in the AP Coaches’ Poll rankings or the FloCollege D2/D3 Top 25.

D2 Football’s upsets were unexpected, to say the least, as all four upsets came at the expense of undefeated teams. Three top-20 programs were upset by unranked opponents: unranked Chowan defeated No. 15 North Greenville 16-13, unranked Emory & Henry beat No. 16 Mars Hill 17-9 and unranked Lock Haven won 35-20 against No. 11 Indiana (Pa.).

To add to the carnage, No. 23 Michigan Tech beat No. 6 Grand Valley State 41-35 in an overtime thriller.

Aside from validating the fact that college football is the best thing on Earth, we did learn a lot in Week 6 of D2 Football.

We Can't All Be Perfect

As Hannah Montana once said, “Nobody’s Perfect.”

Just 11 teams remain unbeaten this week, which unfortunately means that 4 teams added a loss to their season. If you read the intro to this piece (if you didn’t, shame on you), you’ll know that those losses were a result of upsets.

Undefeated No. 6 Grand Valley State (vs. No. 23 Michigan Tech), No. 11 Indiana (Pa.) (vs. Lock Haven), No. 15 North Greenville (vs. Chowan) and No. 16 Mars Hill (vs. Lock Haven) all tarnished their shiny records in Week 7.

The Top 5 Teams Won’t Be Leaving Anytime Soon

Ferris State, Harding, CSU-Pueblo, Kutztown and Minnesota State. This quintet has been in our Top 5 since Week 1 of rankings, and unless they decide to loosen up their reins anytime soon, they’re here to stay.

The five combined for a total of 183 points in Week 6 of action and only allowed a combined 40 points through four games (thanks to CSU-Pueblo’s bye week). No. 1 Ferris State and No. 2 Harding shut out their opponents 55-0 and 56-0 in Saturday’s contests.

Week 7 will be a lot tougher for at least the top two: No. 1 Ferris State faces Grand Valley State in D2’s biggest rivalry and No. 2 Harding faces undefeated Henderson State in a GAC battle. The remaining three should remain perfect after Week 7, as CSU-Pueblo hosts New Mexico Highlands (3-3, 1-3) for Homecoming, No. 4 Kutztown travels to winless Millersville (0-6, 0-3) and Minnesota State is granted a much-deserved bye week.

We Underestimated Michigan Tech

Okay, Huskies fans, we’re sorry.

I firmly believe that our team underestimated the IQ and abilities of Michigan Tech’s football squad, and I’m here to admit that.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, No. 23 Michigan Tech took down No. 6 Grand Valley State 41-35 in overtime. This was MTU’s first win against GVSU since 2014. After the Lakers fumbled a field goal on the first possession of overtime, the Huskies scored on theirs with a one-yard leap into the endzone by quarterback Alex Bueno.

The Huskies outsmarted and outplayed the Lakers. Tech scored on the first drive following a 60-yard kickoff return from Abram Larner, bringing the score to 7-0 after a 14-yard Bueno-Larner touchdown and PAT by Avery Kucharski. A trick play came in the fourth quarter when Jaxon Lippert and Larner were lined up for a GVSU punt. As Lippert swung out right, Lakers followed the sophomore while Larner stayed put on the left, fielding the ball and hauling it in for a 74-yard touchdown.

Michigan Tech’s win versus Grand Valley State was the second time in two weeks that the Huskies tarnished a perfect record. They put an end to Roosevelt's undefeated hot streak in Week 5 with a 57-28 road win in Chicago, Ill.

Davenport’s Cephus Harris Cannot Be Stopped

The senior running back from No. 11 Davenport has nothing stopping him - not even himself.

In the Week 6 matchup versus Northern Michigan, Cephus Harris rushed 29 times for 225 yards and three touchdowns, adding three rushing scores for the third consecutive game this season. Even more impressive, he broke the 1,000 rushing-yard single-season threshold for the second time in his career as a result. With 1,224 yards on the season, Harris broke his own single-season school record from last year.

In Week 5 at Saginaw Valley State, he carried the ball a school-record 35 times for 265 yards and three touchdowns. In this game, he became the all-time rushing leader at Davenport with 2,095 yards, outshining his older brother and former record-holder, Myren Harris, in the process.

Harris is the best all-purpose player in D2: this season, he has accumulated 1,224 rushing yards and 130 receiving yards on 159 plays through six games to average 225.67 yards per game. He also leads the nation in rushing yards (1,224) and rushing yards per game (204.0) and ranks second in D2 in rushing touchdowns (14).

Slippery Rock, Harding Remain The Best Offensive, Defensive Teams In The Nation

Slippery Rock and Harding: they’re undefeated for a reason.

The Rock and the Bisons are the best teams in the nation when regarding total offense and defense, respectively. Slippery Rock has racked up 3,350 yards and 44 touchdowns on 390 plays through six games. They average 8.59 yards per play and 558.3 yards per game. They have the most touchdowns, plays and offensive yards per game across all NCAA divisions. Their scoring has been led by senior running back Jayjay Jordan, who leads D2 in scoring with 18 touchdowns (16 rushing).

Through 317 plays in six games, Harding has only allowed 4.22 yards per play and 223.2 yards per game. Harding’s junior defensive lineman Kaleb Walker leads D2 in sacks with seven total (six solo) for a loss of 51 yards.
