D2 Football's Most Dangerous Teams: The Chaos Index

D2 Football's Most Dangerous Teams: The Chaos Index

Here’s the FloCollege Chaos Index, an honest attempt at assessing D2 football’s most unpredictable teams after a wild first five weeks of the 2025 season.

We're only five weeks into the Division 2 football season, but we've already seen so much turmoil and pandemonium. It's one of the greatest things about D2 football, the fact that anything can happen on any given Saturday.

Like Tiffin nearly coming back against Ferris State, or Central Washington nearly scoring 100 points last weekend against Western New Mexico. Or the story of Trinidad Chambliss, who worked his way from backup quarterback to starter, to champion to D1 star.

To make sense of the mayhem — or at least capture the spirit of the first month — we came up with the FloCollege Chaos Index, our best attempt to put a number on the bedlam.

FloCollege Chaos Index

The Chaos Index isn’t about who’s best — it’s about who goes off script.

We rated each team’s chaos on a 1-to-5-pepper scale 🌶️.

Pittsburg State Gorillas (3-2) - 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Chaos Agent: Strength of Schedule

  • Signature Win: 17-14 upset of then-No. 3 Grand Valley State
  • Losses: No. 1 Ferris State (17-34), then-No. 20 Central Oklahoma (24-27)
  • Next Game: vs. (RV) Nebraska-Kearney

Why So Spicy: Pittsburg State is pure distilled chaos. They have, bar-none, one of the most brutal schedules in Division 2 football.

The Gorillas started the year 0-2, opening with a loss to reigning champion Ferris State. Then things got weird. They dropped their next game to then-No. 20 Central Oklahoma, a team that has since fallen out of the Top 25 entirely. And then it got weirder: they turned around and beat Ferris’ bitter rival, Grand Valley State, on a late field goal. The Lakers are a D2 powerhouse, and they were ranked No. 3 at the time.

There is a world where Pittsburg State wins every regular season game they have left, wins the MIAA title, and then sweeps through the playoffs to a national championship. The Gorillas are absolutely equipped to do that.

But there's another world where they lose one more game, and have to pray to the football gods for an at-large bid. Grab your popcorn and your tabasco. This is the spicy chaos of Pittsburg State.

MSU Moorhead Dragons (3-2) - 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Chaos Agent: Jack Strand

  • Signature Win: 51-3 vs. SW Minnesota State
  • Hot Start: 3-0 with blowouts (51-3 vs. SMSU, 45-21 vs. Winona St.)
  • Cold Snap: Lost 17-27 to Wayne St. (NE) and 14-28 to No. 16 Minnesota-Duluth
  • Next Game: vs. Minot State

Why So Spicy: After barely escaping Week 1 with a win over Northern Michigan—a team that hasn’t won since 2022—MSUM caught fire, posting back-to-back 40+ scorefests. But the last two weeks have been a different story: the Dragons haven’t scored more than 17 points, including a 14-point loss to Minnesota Duluth.

The story starts and ends with quarterback Jack Strand. He is an elite D2 talent, and probably a D1-level talent. He is the engine behind MSUM. Strand has already piled up 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns, but he’s also logged more pass attempts than any other D2 QB by a margin of 15 throws.

Strand is absolutely capable of carrying the Dragons into the expanded playoff format, and every opponent has to respect him under center. The team's success will hinge on whether Strand can maintain the pass-heavy pace without wearing down.

Edward Waters Tigers (4-1) - 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Chaos Agent: Turnovers (11 turnovers gained, 13 turnovers lost)

  • Signature Win: 41-38 walk-off win over No. 13 Virginia Union
  • Other wins: 46-14 vs. Miles; 41-14 vs. Savannah State
  • Worst Loss: 9-35 at Bethune-Cookman (FCS)
  • Next Game: vs. Kentucky State

Why So Spicy: Edward Waters is such an interesting case and it's part of what makes Division 2 football great. EWU has a rich history as an HBCU football program, including a perfect 9-0 season in 1964. But the program was dropped in 1968 before being revived in 2001, however, not much success followed, the Tigers have had one winning season since 2005. In 2019 the program moved to D2, and now in 2025, they have started the season 4-1.

Now that we've set the table: the chaos. The Tigers left their first two opponents this season in the dust (Savannah State, Miles) before notching one of the biggest upsets of the season with a last-second walk-off field goal against then-No. 10 Virginia Union. Edward Waters' only loss came to FCS school Bethune Cookman.

Not only have they upset VU and stacked four wins to start the season, they are doing it in one of the chaotic ways possible: with all the turnovers. The Tigers are Top 10 in D2 football in both turnovers gained and turnovers lost. To put it another way, EWU has 11 takeaways on the season, but they've also lost 9 fumbles and 4 interceptions, leaving with with a -2 turnover margin. Thus the chaos.

UNC Pembroke Braves (4-1) - 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Chaos Agent: Defensive Progression

  • Signature Win: 31-0 shutout of then-No. 20 Valdosta State on the road
  • Other Big Win: 25-21 upset of then-No. 16 Delta State
  • Only Loss: 21-30 in the opener vs. Wingate
  • Next Game: @ Erskine

Why So Spicy: After losing their opening game to Wingate, a good team, Pembroke gave up 24 points to Fayetteville State in Week 2. The defense was holding up, but it was basically average, if not below average.

However, every single week the Braves have played a game this season, they've allowed less points than the week before. In other words, they allowed the most points in Week 1, the second-most in Week 2, and so on.

That is until last week, when the UNCP defense shut out then-No. 20-Valdosta State 31-0, and while VSU is not the team that went to the national championship last season, it's not as if the Blazers couldn't score points -- they were coming off a 56-point thrashing of Chowan.
