High School Football America 100
No. 1 Mater Dei Takes On No. 6 St. John Bosco
The biggest hurdle for Mater Dei (California) in its drive for a fourth High School Football America national championship comes Friday night. The top-ranked Monarchs will travel to No. 6 St. John Bosco (California) for their annual Trinity League showdown.
The biggest hurdle for Mater Dei (California) in its drive for a fourth High School Football America national championship comes Friday night. The top-ranked Monarchs will travel to No. 6 St. John Bosco (California) for their annual Trinity League showdown.
These two began the season ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Preseason HSFA 100, powered by NFL Play Football. The two flip-flopped positions in late August. Bosco, the defending national champ, held the No. 1 ranking until a surprising 30-23 loss to Hawaii's Kahuku on September 16.
These two national heavyweights have won five of the last six HSFA national championships. Mater Dei won titles in 2017, 2018 and 2021. Aside from last year's title, SJB also won the '19 crown.
As far as the 2023 national championship chase, Mater Dei realizes that while Friday night's game is huge, it also knows there could be another matchup with the Braves down the road in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Four times since 2016, the Monarchs and Braves have met twice in the same season. Each time, the winner of the regular season game has lost in their playoff matchup.
In Georgia, No. 8 Buford and No. 18 Mill Creek will try to keep themselves in the national championship hunt. The suburban Atlanta-powers enter the game with 6-0 records. The winner will have the inside track to the Class 7A Region 8 championship that will help in the postseason.
Arizona's Centennial makes a huge jump from No. 261 to No. 47 in the latest rankings after edging former No. 37 Chandler 29-28. The Coyotes jumped out to a 26-0 lead in the first half and then held on at the end.
Former No. 12 Miami Columbus (Florida) suffered its first defeat of the season Saturday night. The Explorers lost to former No. 169 Homestead 32-16. The loss drops Columbus to No. 71 this week in the rankings created with HSFA’s proprietary algorithm. Homestead moves 71 spots to No. 98.
Seven new teams cracked the HSFA 300 this week:
No. 227 Palm Beach Central (Florida)
No. 240 Milford (Ohio)
No. 252 Riverside (Jacksonville, Florida)
No. 273 Summer Creek (Texas)
No. 290 Lamar (Houston, Texas)
No. 295 White Knoll (South Carolina)
No. 300 Batavia (Illinois)
