Davenport had its chances, but the Calder City Classic trophy is staying in Big Rapids.

No. 1 Ferris State held off No. 9 Davenport 23-14 on Halloween at Top Taggart Field, extending its winning streak to 39 games and taking sole possession of first place in the GLIAC.

The Bulldogs improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while the Panthers fell to 8-1 and 4-1.

Chase Carter’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Taariik Brett gave Ferris State breathing room in the fourth quarter, and Ryan Ahern’s late interception ended Davenport’s last scoring threat.

Cephus Harris finished with 162 rushing yards and both Panthers touchdowns, but Davenport left with its first loss and another missed opportunity against the Bulldogs. Ferris State has now won all 11 meetings with Davenport and the first three Calder City Classic trophies.

    FINAL - Davenport 14, Ferris State 23

Ferris State once again held on for the win, in what was their lowest-scoring game since 2024. It didn't matter because the Bulldogs offense and defense stepped up when it mattered and took down an upstart Davenport team who consistently missed their chances.

Davenport will look back on choosing to punt on two 4-and-1s at midfield, and pressing for a touchdown late in the game instead of taking the field goal and wonder what could have been. The Panthers take their first loss of the season and FSU continue their winning streak to 39 games.

Cephus Harris had a monster game, accumulating 162 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns.

    Davenport Final Stat Leaders

    • Cephus Harris - 32 carries, 162 yards, 2 TD

    4th, 1:32 - Davenport 14, Ferris State 23

Davenport gave themselves a chance, but were unable to get a touchdown in the red zone against this Ferris State defense.

The clock had ran down below two minutes, but instead of taking a field goal and an onside kick, Davenport continued to push for the touchdown. In the end a James Young pass is picked off by Ryan Ahern, almost certainly sealing the Panthers fate today.

One minute left in this game and FSU have a full set of downs.
