The No. 1 team in the nation is back on home turf again, this time for a Week 8 matchup against GLIAC opponent No. 12 Michigan Tech.

Ferris State Football survived the Anchor-Bone Classic in Week 7, beating Grand Valley State 41-34 for its 37th consecutive win, extending a streak that dates back to the 2024 season.

Michigan Tech survived its rival, too, outplaying Northern Michigan for a 56-33 victory to capture its 16th consecutive Miner’s Cup in Week 7. Before that, the Huskies downed the Lakers in a 41-35 overtime thriller, beating GVSU for the first time since 2014.

They’ve both beaten the boys in blue, but what will it take for the Huskies to knock off the No. 1 Bulldogs? Well, aside from faith, trust and pixie dust, here are five ways Michigan Tech could potentially upset Ferris State.

Apply QB Pressure

Wyatt Bower is ridiculous, and that’s all I have to say on that matter (just kidding... but seriously, he's a monster).

In all seriousness, Ferris State’s sophomore quarterback is a major threat to Michigan Tech. In Week 7, he rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns against rival Grand Valley State. He also added 137 yards and a touchdown through the air. If you’re doing the math, that means Bower was responsible for 290 yards of offense and four touchdowns in Division II’s biggest rivalry game.

If Michigan Tech or any team wants to beat Ferris State, it needs to start with slowing down Wyatt Bower.

Avoid Ahern

In the Week 7 matchup between Ferris State and Grand Valley State, linebacker Ryan Ahern led the Bulldogs with 13 tackles, including five solo stops, and earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. The defensive unit limited GVSU to 305 yards of total offense and came up with two turnovers in the 41-34 rivalry win.

Control Time Of Possession

Through seven games, Ferris State has averaged a 28:25 time of possession. The Bulldogs held the ball for 30:35 in a 42-0 win over Northern Michigan and 31:14 in a 55-0 win over Saginaw Valley State. In Week 7, Ferris State once again won the possession battle, holding the ball for 30:52 in its 41-34 victory over Grand Valley State.

Michigan Tech averages 29:49 in time of possession this season, but the Huskies have already shown they don’t necessarily need to dominate the clock to beat a top GLIAC opponent. They held the ball for just 23:56 in their overtime win over Grand Valley State. Against Ferris State, the bigger challenge will be sustaining drives and keeping Bower and the Bulldogs’ offense off the field whenever possible.

Take The Lead At The Half

To be fair, we don’t know what would happen if Ferris State didn’t lead at halftime: it hasn’t happened this season.

Through all seven games in 2026, the Bulldogs have gone into halftime ahead of their opponents. The closest a team came to spoiling that streak was Grand Valley State in Week 7. The Lakers scored 17 unanswered points in the first quarter, only for the ‘Dawgs to answer with 20 points in the second and take a 20-17 lead into halftime.

If Michigan Tech goes into the locker room with a lead, the Huskies will be the first team to do so against Ferris State this season. And against a team riding a 37-game winning streak, putting the Bulldogs in that unfamiliar position wouldn’t be a bad place to start.

Keep It Clean

In Week 7, Ferris State racked up 80 penalty yards, making an already difficult rivalry game even harder on the Bulldogs. They’ve totaled 400 yards on 45 penalties this season but have managed to overcome those mistakes on the way to a 7-0 record.

Michigan Tech has been penalized 50 times for 483 yards, an average of 69 penalty yards per game. Against the No. 1 team in the country, the Huskies can’t afford to give Ferris State extra yards and extra opportunities. To improve their chances of pulling off the upset, they need to keep it clean.
