So much attention continues to be on the Missouri Valley Football Conference, and rightfully so, as six of the nine teams are ranked in the latest American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll, and another received votes.
Among the MVFC standouts is South Dakota State, the No. 1 team in the nation.
The Jackrabbits are 5-1 overall, one of two 2-0 teams in the conference standings and should be well-rested after a bye in Week 6.

The biggest battle on the slate will feature SDSU, the 2022 and 2023 FCS national champion, against a No. 15 North Dakota team looking for redemption after a loss last Saturday.
All eyes will be on the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where the football world will get to see how the Jackrabbits perform in their first test as the top-ranked team and how the week off affected their momentum.
There are 59 FCS games scheduled for Week 7, with one Friday, 58 throughout the day Saturday and six streaming live on FloCollege and the FloSports app.
If you haven’t yet subscribed to FloCollege, what are you waiting for? There are amazing games across the FCS, Division II and Division III every week.

Here are our featured FCS games and picks for Week 7 of the 2026 season:
No. 20 Monmouth (4-2, 3-0 CAA) at New Hampshire (2-5, 1-3 CAA)
This one might not be as significant on the national radar, but it certainly means a lot within the Coastal Athletic Association.
Monmouth sits alone at the top of the CAA standings at 3-0, while Campbell, Bryant and Stony Brook all are 2-0 and waiting (hoping?) for the Hawks to slip up.
The numbers suggest that MU isn’t facing the toughest test this week against New Hampshire, but there are no guarantees in sports. Just ask two-time defending CAA champion Rhode Island which was stunned by winless North Carolina A&T on Sept. 26.
The Aggies didn’t stop there, either. Last week, they edged New Hampshire 30-27 in a double-overtime thriller.
So, as always, expected the unexpected.
While Monmouth is looking to go on the road and stay perfect in CAA play, the three lurking squads also will be battling teams from the bottom half of the conference standings.
Saturday could go as most would expect, or it could be complete chaos. The only way to know for sure is to park yourself in front of FloCollege, because all of the CAA games mentioned above will be broadcast live.
*The Monmouth-UNH game will be broadcast live on FloCollege on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
Prediction: Monmouth 35, New Hampshire 14

No. 1 South Dakota State (5-1, 2-0 MVFC) at No. 15 North Dakota (5-2, 2-1 MVFC)
For the first time since 2024, South Dakota State has reached the top of the FCS rankings. And the reward? A week off to rest and regroup.
We’ll know in a few days if the bye week was a blessing or a curse for the Jackrabbits, who have won four consecutive games since a loss to FBS Northwestern and enter Week 7 at 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MVFC.
Their last top billing came as part of a run that included national championships in 2022 and 2023 and another trip to the semifinals in 2024.
SDSU’s ascension this time came after a win over No. 11 Illinois State, paired with a seismic upset of reigning national champion Montana State by winless Idaho.
The first test for the new No. 1 team won’t be an easy one, as the Jackrabbits will go on the road to meet conference foe North Dakota, which is looking to rebound from loss to Northern Iowa another front-runner in the loaded MVFC.
The Fighting Hawks, ranked 15th in the AFCA poll, are 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, so they can’t afford to fall farther behind in the league standings.
The good news for ND is that the Fighting Hawks lead the all-time series with SDSU, 47-39-5, and should be extra motivated after a home loss to the Jackrabbits last year in their regular-season finale.
South Dakota State won the 2025 showdown in overtime, 34-31. It was the first overtime game between the two programs.
The bad news for ND is that the Fighting Hawks are just 1-7 against SDSU since they moved their rivalry from Division II to the FCS in 2010.
Prediction: South Dakota State 28, North Dakota 24
No. 6 Youngstown State (5-2, 3-1 MVFC) vs. No. 25 Northern Iowa (3-2, 2-0 MVFC)
This is the only other ranked matchup among the four dozen FCS games this week.
Youngstown State has been up and down the rankings this year with high-profile losses to FBS Kentucky and FCS powerhouse South Dakota State, but the Penguins have reached a high point of No. 6 following a 57-24 win over Indiana State.
Now, they return home to Stambaugh Stadium for a homecoming showdown with surging Northern Iowa, a 24-17 winner over North Dakota last weekend.
YSU, 5-2 overall, is the only team in the MVFC that has played four games so far, and the Penguins are 3-1, while South Dakota State and Northern Iowa sit at 2-0.
With ND and SD hanging close at 2-1, this hoco clash could have huge implications within the conference.
NIU has the advantage against Youngstown State, including a 26-11 overall record and 11-7 mark in Youngstown. However, the Penguins have won the last two meetings, one in each location. YSU won 35-32 last year in Iowa and 39-38 in overtime in Ohio in 2024.
This one’s going to be a firecracker.
Prediction: Youngstown State 42, Northern Iowa 33
No. 2 Tarleton State (6-0, 1-0 UAC) vs. Central Arkansas (2-4, 0-2 UAC)
Tarleton State is 6-0, continuing to build its playoff résumé and is No. 1 in waiting.
The Texans held strong at No. 2 with a 40-32 statement win over No. 8 Austin Peay, which also helped them improve to 1-0 in the United Athletic Conference.
TSU is one of four undefeated teams in the newest rankings. The Texans are joined by No. 3 Stephen F. Austin (6-0), No. 4 Lehigh (6-0) and No. 17 Harvard (4-0).
This is not the time to let up or be shocked at home by struggling Central Arkansas in a pivotal UAC matchup.
The Bears are 2-4 overall, 0-2 in conference play and have never beaten Tarleton State. They’ve met four times, with the first coming in 2021. The Texans have outscored the Bears 144-50, including a 56-10 win last year in Arkansas.
For TSU to remain a legitimate conference and national contender, this is a must-win contest.
Prediction: Tarleton State 48, Central Arkansas 13
No. 7 Montana (5-2, 3-1 Big Sky) vs. Idaho (1-5, 1-2 Big Sky)
No matter what Idaho does the rest of the season, the Vandals will be able to hang their helmets on the biggest win in program history, a 35-34 victory over top-ranked Montana State, the reigning FCS national champion.
Not only did it shake up the FCS rankings and create a frenzy in the Big Sky Conference, it also came at the worst time for the Bobcats, who have had to wait two weeks to get back on the field for any kind of redemption.
The upset came on Oct. 2, and MSU’s rebound game isn’t until Oct. 17.
The momentum was short-lived for Idaho, which followed the win with a 38-27 conference loss to Weber State, but the Vandals have another opportunity to play spoiler again this weekend against Montana.
Idaho’s efforts this season, good and bad, have heavily influenced the early Big Sky standings. Losses to Cal Poly and Weber State, along with the win over MSU, have helped create a logjam at the top of the standings.
There’s a four-way tie right now, with Montana, Northern Arizona, Cal Poly and Weber State all 3-1, while Montana State, UC Davis and Portland State all are close behind at 2-1.
The Vandals can add to the chaos this week by kicking the No. 7 Montana Grizzlies while they’re down after a surprise conference loss to Northern Arizona last week.
At 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Big Sky games, the win wouldn’t do much for Idaho’s chances this season, but it certainly would mean something for the other programs, both within the conference and nationally.
Idaho actually leads the all-time series with Montana, 57-32-2, but the Vandals are just 1-9 against the Grizzlies since the turn of the century. The lone win was a 30-23 victory in Montana in 2022.
Prediction: Montana 28, Idaho 9

Some Things To Know About FCS Football
The FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) is the second tier of NCAA Division I football, with the top tier being the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision).
While the FBS determines its national champion through a 12-team, committee-selected College Football Playoff, the FCS Championship includes 24 teams.
The FCS conference champions automatically qualify for the playoffs, and the remaining spots are filled via at-large selection.
This season, there will be 128 programs across 13 conferences. The regular season will begin in late August, and the playoffs will get underway at the end of November.
Who Won The Each Football National Championship For The 2025-2026 Season?

The top 16 teams are seeded, with the first eight earning byes into the second round. Seeds 9-16 must play in the opening round of action, but they get to play host, as do the higher seeds in each game through the semifinals.
The two semifinal winners then make the trip to Nashville to play for the national championship.
In 2025, Montana State defeated Illinois State 35-34 in overtime to claim the trophy.
Since 2011, North Dakota State had been dominating the FCS landscape, winning 10 national titles, but the Bison have now moved to a bigger pasture – the FBS level as part of the Mountain West Conference.
