Another week, another round of D2 football predictions.

Through my first two weeks of predictions, I have gone 4-7. Listen, it may not be the greatest mark, but we’re still in the early weeks of the season. My predictions need to get into mid-season form, too.

Here’s to hoping for a winning record this week! These are my predictions for Week 5 of D2 football:

3 Teams Stay Perfect

No. 1 Ferris State, No. 6 Grand Valley State, No. 10 Northwood. Three top-10 teams, all undefeated - and they’ll stay that way.

I’m sure that one of the remaining 16 teams will also stay perfect, but I feel pretty confident in these three, as they are all up against winless teams.

Ferris State heads to Marquette, Mich. on Saturday, Oct. 3 for a 1 p.m. matchup against GLIAC foe Northern Michigan (0-4) to open conference play. The Lakers host the Warriors of Wayne State (MI) (0-4) on Saturday in front of a packed Homecoming crowd. Northwood hosts Kentucky Wesleyan in Midland, Mich. for their third G-MAC battle on Saturday at noon.

Tiffin Extends Their Win Streak

After dropping their season opener to Carson-Newman (41-38), Tiffin has not stopped winning. And I think they will continue to do so.

From Week 2 through Week 4, the Dragons have outscored their opponents 121-34, with their largest margin of victory in their most recent win at Kentucky Wesleyan (48-13).

In Week 5, they face off against Ashland (1-3, 1-1) at 1 p.m. ET.  Every Eagles loss this season has been at the hands of ranked teams or teams just outside of the top 25; all of those losses were within 10 points.

I predict that Tiffin will extend their win streak to four with a close win at Ashland… despite it being Homecoming.

Bentley Bounces Back

Through the first four weeks, Bentley has sandwiched their wins between two losses. The Falcons opened their season with a 38-3 loss at No. 1 Ferris State. They went on to win the next two (at Saint Anselm, 48-14; vs. Post, 49-7) before dropping their NE10 opener 35-28 at Franklin Pierce.

Despite the Week 4 loss, I think they could add a W to their schedule in the Week 5 matchup at Assumption. Both teams are 2-2, but Assumption’s losses come from No. 3 Kutztown (56-35) and No. 23 Frostburg State (24-19).

Although the Greyhounds have an NE10 win to their name (at American International College, 37-14), the Falcons outpace them offensively and defensively. Bentley leads the conference in offense, averaging 437 yards per game, and holds their opponents to a fourth-ranking 322.

Mars Hill Keeps Applying Pressure

No. 23 Mars Hill (4-0, 3-0) has been wonderfully consistent this season, especially in terms of defense. The Lions rank fifth in the nation in total defense, holding their opponents to just 228.8 yards per game. Additionally, they’ve only allowed a nation-leading three touchdowns this season. Caden Hilemon leads the team with three interceptions.

The Lions host the Pioneers of Tusculum (3-2, 2-1) in Week 5 of D2 play. Both teams are fresh off Week 4 wins; Mars Hill took down ranked Carson-Newman 10-6 to remain undefeated, and a late touchdown by Tusculum’s Cam Ferguson propelled the Pioneers to a 27-22 victory over Catawba.

I think this game will be a close one, as long as Mars Hill can limit the offensive efforts of Tusculum, a team that ranks second-to-last in offense in the SAC.

Fly, Eagles, Fly!

Well, they didn’t in this week’s edition of Monday Night Football. But, maybe they will on Saturday versus Lenoir-Rhyne.

No. 18 Carson-Newman was knocked off by Mars Hill in Week 4 in a 10-6 decision. They sit at 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the SAC as they enter Saturday’s contest against 2-3 (1-2) Lenoir-Rhyne.

Both teams are battle-tested. L-R hasn’t played a team with a losing record this season, with their opponents posting a combined 16-2 record. Carson-Newman’s only loss this season was by a four-point deficit, and they’ve outscored their opponents 151-68 this season. They’ve played two ranked opponents this season and taken them down on both occasions.

Despite rough looks from both teams this season, I think that C-N will pull out a win. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts the Eagles at 2 p.m. in Hickory, N.C. on Saturday, Oct. 3.
