The Crimson will take on New Hampshire to open the Crimson's season in a game that's massively important for both teams.

Harvard Loses Their Leader To The Transfer Portal

The biggest news in the offseason for Harvard was the loss of their senior quarterback Jaden Craig, who transferred to TCU for his last season of college football.

In 2024 and 2025, Craig combined for 5,299 yards, 48 touchdowns to just 9 interceptions. He was First Team All-Ivy League in 2025 and was one of the most sought after transfer quarterbacks in the nation.

Dante Torres will take over starting duties in 2026 for the Crimson. He appeared in five games for Harvard in 2025, going 8-13, 153 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. 

Torres has big shoes to fill, and it’s unlikely he’s going to produce at the same level as Craig. But he’ll have an opportunity to start off the season on a positive note against a New Hampshire defense that allowed 28 points against Albany and 66 points vs Syracuse.

It’s The Battle Of Top Tier Running Backs In Wildcat Stadium

Harvard running back Xaviah Bascon is arguably the top skill position player in the Ivy League. Coming off a Second Team All-Ivy League selection in 2025, Bascon is primed to take a step forward as the focal point of the Crimson offense.

Running back Joquez Smith for the Wildcats is coming off a season-best performance against Stonehill where he ran for 122 yards and 3 touchdowns. He splits carries with Myles Thomason, who has run for just under 1400 yards during his time with UNH.

Saturday’s dogfight could come down to who can stop the run. Keeping Bascon under check and forcing Torres to throw could lead to a long game for Harvard. On the other hand, UNH is 0-2 when rushing for under 65 yards this season, with their one win coming on a 153 rushing yard performance.

Whoever controls the line of scrimmage will control the game.

Both Teams Have Young “Prodigy” Coaches

UNH coach Sean Goldrich is one of the youngest head coaches in college football at just 33 years old. He comes from an offensive background, being a quarterback coach at Yale and Delaware.

Harvard is led by Andrew Audrich, the 43-year-old who spent years as an offensive coach at Rutgers and Princeton, has led the Crimson to a 17-4 record over two seasons.

The growing trend in college football is pivoting towards hiring young, offensive-minded coaches, and that’s exactly what these two teams have.

These are two names to watch in head coaching searches in the future. But first, they’ll try to earn marquee wins for their programs as they climb the FCS ranks.

New Hampshire Has NEVER Beaten Harvard

Harvard’s 8-0 record against New Hampshire is the second most wins without a loss against any program in the school’s history (Maine, 11-0). For UNH, their 0-8 record against Harvard is the most amount of losses they have against ANY program without a win.

The two schools went 85 years without playing each other before renewing the matchup in 2024, with Harvard winning 28-23.

Xaviah Bascon ran for two touchdowns in the game to power the Crimson’s comeback at home. He’ll have the chance to repeat his performance from two years ago to power another Crimson win.
