For most of Division 2 football, this weekend will represent the end of non-conference play, but there are still a few very compelling matchups ahead. We've already seen a lot of movement around the D2 Top 25, and depending on how three specific games go this week, there could be more.

- West Alabama Beats Lenoir-Rhyne 34-23 Behind Five Takeaways
Pittsburg State is suddenly looking for its first win; Ashland has an opportunity to erase some of the sting from its opening loss, and Central Washington gets the biggest test possible after nearly knocking off an FCS opponent.
On the other side are three teams with plenty to prove themselves, including the two-time defending national champions.
Here are three D2 football games that could shake up the rankings in Week 2.
Can The Gorillas Avoid An 0-3 Start?
1:00 p.m. ET: Pittsburg State vs. West Alabama
Pittsburg State started 0-2 in 2024 before going on a 10-win streak and into the D2 playoffs. The Gorillas eventually lost to national runners-up, Harding. But it was a successful season by any measure.
However, Pitt finds themselves back in the same spot this year, 0-2, after losing to Ferris State and Emporia State to start the season. They always have high expectations, and heading into a matchup at West Alabama will be the ultimate litmus test.
West Alabama, meanwhile, is moving in the opposite direction. The Tigers are 2-0 after a 34-23 road win over Lenoir-Rhyne in which they forced five turnovers.
Another Pitt State loss would make an already surprising start even harder to overlook, while a West Alabama win would give the Tigers another strong argument for moving up the rankings.
Can GVSU Keep Climbing?
7:00 p.m. ET: Grand Valley State vs. Ashland
Grand Valley State had an off year in 2025, by all accounts. They went 7-3, and for any other team that might be a solid season, but for the Lakers it's a disappointment. In most polls, they fell out of the top 25.
Fast forward to now, and GVSU sits at No. 8 in the FloCollege Top 25, and you'll have to go elsewhere to see the other ones. But I bet they are pretty high. They're 2-0 and coming off a 56-14 win over West Texas A&M.
Ashland finds itself on the other side of that equation. The Eagles lost their opener 34-24 to IUP and fell out of the FloCollege Top 25.
A win over GVSU would immediately change the conversation around Ashland, and another win for GVSU would be a fantastic start to 2026.
Can The Wildcats Threaten No. 1 Ferris?
9:00 p.m. ET: Ferris State vs. Central Washington
Here's the thing. Ferris State will eventually lose a game. They are going on a 32 game winning streak, but no man defeats time. Now, could they win every game over the next two or three seasons without a loss? Absolutely. Could they lose this week? Maybe.
Ferris State remains the team everyone in Division 2 is chasing. The Bulldogs are 2-0, still No. 1 and have already added a 42-14 win over Pittsburg State, and a 38-3 win over Bentley.
But, Central Washington is interesting. They've put together some strong seasons recently in the LSC. They are essentially travel-resistant, though this game will be at home.
In fact, the Wildcats are the second westernmost team in D2 football, behind only Western Oregon, which is 125 miles farther west. Not much. Ferris State will be starting usually late, with a 9 p.m. ET kickoff. It appears to be the Bulldogs' latest kickoff in the last several years, including their previous trip to CWU, which started at 7:05 p.m. ET
