Another chapter in the storied Anchor-Bone Classic rivalry unfolds this fall when Ferris State and Grand Valley State collide once more in what’s already shaping up to be one of the marquee matchups of the Division 2 football season.

The Lakers and Bulldogs have traded blows for decades, with the Anchor-Bone Trophy at stake since 2002, and the overall series stretching back to the early 1970s. In recent years, the rivalry has only heightened—games between these two often carry conference and national implications, making this contest far more than just a grudge match.

One of the most memorable performances in recent memory came in last year’s edition, when Trinidad Chambliss torched GVSU’s defense en route to a 34-7 Bulldog victory at Lubbers Stadium. He piled up 122 rushing yards on 22 carries, threw for 114 yards, and accounted for three touchdowns in a dominant showing.

And yet, in 2023, Avery Moore and Cade Peterson combined to crush the Bulldogs 49-28.

Looking ahead to 2025, all eyes will turn to redshirt freshman Wyatt Bower, who is carving out a role as a dynamic dual-threat quarterback for Ferris State.

Ferris State enters this Classic riding a wave of momentum, and GVSU will no doubt be primed to return the favor.
