In a football match-up that goes all the way back to the 1960s, William & Mary vs No. 22 Villanova football was back in an early season CAA battle in Pennsylvania as the Wildcats hosted the Tribe, kicking off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Playing their first game in 1966, the series was nearly even with 20 wins in favor of William & Mary and 16 wins for Nova. It's been a few years, however, since their last meeting in 2022 which resulted in a dominant win, 45-12 for the Tribe with the home field advantage.

Both teams held two losses in their pocket heading into the match with a lot of potential energy pent up ready to prove that they can be a top contender in the CAA and FCS football this season.

Villanova was back with a vengeance to satisfy the Wildcats' faithful after an upset by the lower-ranked Monmouth, 51-33 on the road.

The Tribe was hoping to pick up a huge win to pile on to Villanova's misfortune and launch a strong pitch to join the top-25 FCS rankings next week after being predicted to finish 7th in the CAA standings in the preseason coaches poll but was unable to deliver.

William & Mary Can't Deliver On Final Push - 0:00 4Q

On their final drive of regulation time, William & Mary resorts to the air to begin their push down the field. It is a sudden death level of energy in Villanova as the Tribe tries to extend time or secure the win.

Hughes escaped the pocket to make a pass to Lemmond, but Julian Talley was there to break it up and make it 3rd and 10.

On 3rd and 10, Hughes went to McElwain for a 7 yard gain to push it to 4th and 2.

He quickly completed another pass to Rashad Raymond for the first down and to run out the sideline with 9 seconds remaining.

On their first attempt, Hughes goes for Johnson deep to the left but it's incomplete.

For the final attempt, Hughes slipped and was sacked behind the line of scrimmage to secure the win for the Villanova Wildcats. Capri Martin and Shane Hartzell were credited with the tackle for loss.

Villanova Runs Clock Out, Tribe Has A Chance - 1:05 4Q

The Wildcats turned to Ragland and Avit on the ground late in the game as they let the clock run out. Over six plays, they were able to move the ball down the field 53 yards, including a 27- and 11-yard gain to cement their lead.

Off the break, they immediately go back to Avit who gains just 1 yard and leaves the offense with 4th and 4.

At 1:09, Villanova missed the field goal to extend the lead to ten and secure the win in one of their first major CAA match-ups of the season.

Instead, the Tribe is left with 65 seconds to tie it up.

Tribe Scores Touchdown! - 4:38 4Q

William & Mary 24 - 31 Villanova

After just missing the endzone on the play before, Tyler Hughes was able to eek the ball past the defense off the edge to bring the score much closer with less than five minutes remaining.

W&M Desperate For Something - 8:00 4Q

William & Mary 17 - 31 Villanova

With less than half the quarter remaining and an increasing deficit, the Tribe are left with an uphill battle as they must piece together big play after big play in order to bring the game back within reach.

Hughes starts with his own scramble for 13 yards and a third completion to Lemmond for 13 yards.

Moments later, Hughes connected to Joseph Johnson on 3rd and 12 for 22 yards to bring the ball much closer to scoring territory, the 25 yard line.

With six and a half minutes remaining, W&M went with the reverse to clear some open space and push the ball to the 21. A short pass to Raymond for another 7 yards brought them even closer.

Continuing to march, Hughes took it all the way down to the one yard line after a few direction changes to beat Hartzell.

Villanova Puts Together Longest Drive of Game For TD - 10:18 4Q

William & Mary 17 - 31 Villanova

In a huge display of confidence, the Villanova offense pieces together a 13 play, 75-yard drive for another touchdown. They put together two third-down conversions and a fourth-down conversion that ate up 7:52, the longest drive duration by far of the game.

How did they do it? Who else but David Avit to rush it up the middle for a short gain through the scrum after a spin and extension of the ball over the plane. His third touchdown of the day and breaking triple digit yardage today.

Villanova Takes Over - Start of 4Q

William & Mary 17 - 24 Villanova

Isaiah Ragland continued his quality performance in the ground game, adding another 16-yard and 12-yard runs. The first was nullified by a holding call on Chris McCullers, however. The third quarter was coming to a close quickly as it began.

Colella's day also got even better, making a huge catch for 14 yards to keep the Villanova drive alive on third down and move the chains.

A few plays later and very comfy in the pocket, McQuaide threw a bullet out to youngster Ralee Stephens for a great catch and first down.

They immediately followed it up with a Mace rush for 17 yards to keep the field tilted in their favor.

On 4th and 2 at the 20 yard line, Wildcats go with a pass play over the middle straight to Colella who once again competes for the catch and brings it down to extend.

W&M Offense Stalls In Midfield - 3:10 3Q

William & Mary 17 - 24 Villanova

The Tribe began their next drive on the 26. Hughes immediately scrambled on first down for 7 yards, taking the brute force of two Villanova defenders stopping him.

Keeping the pace high, Rashad Raymond got to work on the ground for two quick short gains including a first down.

As the tension continued to rise including tempers between the two teams, Villanova made a stop on the Tribe offense despite 3 first down conversions.

Nova Settles For Field Goal - 8:04 3Q

William & Mary 17 - 24 Villanova

The Wildcats tack on a 43-yard field goal from Jack Barnum to extend the lead to ten and complete an 11-play, 43-yard drive to eat up the first half of the quarter.

Villanova Calls On Avit - 10:33 3Q

William & Mary 17 - 21 Villanova

Penalties continued to be an issue for Nova with a holding call on Nolan Clayton nullified a first down gain by Avit, leaving the team with 2nd and 14. Luckily, Avit was underneath and ran it up field for 11 yards after catching the ball behind the line of scrimmage.

There was a short injury timeout to help W&M red shirt freshman defender Ratliff off the field after a lower body injury.

A few plays later, McQuaide was looking a bit tender as he hobbled around behind the line of scrimmage in between plays. On a run out to the left a W&M defender shoved McQuaide into Mace as he tried to break free and McQuaide could hardly stay on two feet.

William & Mary Starts Second Half With Three And Out - 13:28 3Q

William & Mary 17 - 21 Villanova

In their first possession of the second half, Tyler Hughes returned to the wheel and tried to hit the ground for two short gains before trying the air once again. After an incomplete pass, the Tribe punted it away to give the Wildcats decent field position.

Ja'briel Mace Returns Kickoff For Touchdown - 14:41 3Q

William & Mary 17 - 21 Villanova

And we're off into the second half of this game in what will inevitably be an exciting battle.

To start things off with fireworks, Ja'briel Mace hit max speed to squeeze through the William & Mary special teams and return the opening kickoff for a touchdown to take the lead.

He was credited for a full 100-yard return on the scoring play.

Villanova Almost Pieced It Together To End Half - End of 2Q

William & Mary 17 - 14 Villanova

Villanova started their final drive of the half with two minutes and a dream.

McQuaide completed a 16 yard pass to Colella for yet another big gain to get things rolling on the 2-minute drill. He was handed a big hit by Jalen Jones but bounced up quickly.

A holding call on Kyle Fay after he laid on the defender left the Wildcats with 1st and 20.

On another long pass attempt to Colella up the middle, a near head-to-head contact with W&M's Hicks drew a targeting call from the referee. The flag was picked up after a thorough review. Incomplete pass, 2nd and 20.

McQuaide immediately picked Colella again, on a deep route that he was unable to bring down. 3rd and 20.

He completed the next pass in the flat to the right where Kopecky was just short, 4th and 2.

With just 30 seconds left, Ragland was able to barely make the line and get a first down before Latrelle Smith-Leaks was able to bring him down.

After two clean throws by McQuaide to Ralee Stephens hit the ground, he went back to Colella for a 14 yard gain to reset the downs.

With just 8 seconds left, Colella gets tackled out of bounds at the 24-yard line to give McQuaide one final shot at the endzone.

On a deep attempt at the buzzer, Colella was called for offensive pass interference after catching McQuaide's toss at the pylon. The penalty nullified the play and extended the distance, leaving Villanova's Jack Barnum with a 57-yard attempt.

Kick was no good to end the half.

Tribe Settles For Field Goal, Nova Gets Ball - 1:46 2Q

William & Mary 17 - 14 Villanova

Starting at the 20-yard line with first down, W&M went to the air and after two incompletions to Lemmond and a third intended for Wright, the Tribe settled for a field goal to pause nearly all of the momentum they gained from the big pass.

Keegan Shackford nailed the 37-yard field goal attempt for 3 points to give the ball over to the home team with just under two minutes remaining.

Braidwood kickoff went 65 yards for a touchback.

Hughes Hits 37-Yard Pass At Two Minute Timeout - 2:00 2Q

William & Mary 14 - 14 Villanova

The Tribe chose the ground first for what is likely their final drive of the half.

The Wildcats held them to 3rd and 8 but a bomb down the left side from Tyler Hughes to Deven Thompson resulted in 37 yards as the clock ticked down to 2 minutes for the mandatory timeout.

Wildcats Pick Up Steam, Avit Adds Another Touchdown - 4:01 2Q

William & Mary 14 - 14 Villanova

As they continue to rebuild energy, the Wildcats offense came out on a mission with less than half of the 2nd quarter remaining. McQuaide completed another 20+ yard pass to Colella to open up the field. Ragland added a 6-yard gain before leaving the offense with 3rd down and 4.

Another offsides, the 6th penalty for the home team, knocked it back five yards to increase the challenge.

McQuaide found Kopecky wide open 14 yards up field to set up a 15 yard rush into the endzone by David Avit on the next play.

Villanova Makes Defensive Stop, W&M Punts - 7:23 2Q

Villanova finally mounted a strong defensive stop, Tanner Maddocks receiving the Carter Boyd punt with great field position at the 46.

Villanova Punts Again - 10:57 2Q

William & Mary 14 - 7 Villanova

Opening the drive with a little flair, a double-reverse gave Luke Colella enough room to earn a 15-yard gain before the William & Mary defense put a stop to their progress.

After a short Avit rush and two incomplete passes, the Wildcats once again found themselves on 4th and long to punt it away.

Braden Reed went down hard after going up for a pass and received some attention from the medical staff on the field before walking off the field with support.

The Tribe continue to hold all momentum with two scoring drives in a row vs Villanova's two punts.

Tribe Touchdown, Hughes Up The Middle! - 11:09 2Q

William & Mary 14 - 7 Villanova

Tyler Hughes delivered on the 1-yard line, running it up the middle for a touchdown that took a while for the referees to call but once they cleared the pile, their arms went up.

William & Mary Keeps Pressure On - 11:45 2Q

William & Mary 7 - 7 Villanova

As the 1st quarter came to a close and the 2nd quarter began, the Tribe offense got back to work on pulling the momentum scales in their direction.

The offensive line has been doing great work, giving Tyler Hughes tons of time in the pocket to find someone open in the backfield and complete a second double-digit gain of the drive to Joseph Johnson.

An overthrown ball to Deven Thompson near the endzone drew a pass interference call on Damill Bostic to put the Tribe on the 5-yard line with a new set of downs.

First Quarter Ends Tied, Momentum Hangs In Balance

After the first quarter of play, it looks to be relatively even match between the two, despite a clear difference in the penalties category.

Villanova Goes Three And Out - 1:45 1Q

William & Mary 7 - 7 Villanova

As Villanova got another chance at the ball, they had to start their drive with a deficit thanks to a 15-yard personal foul caused by Anthony Hawkins on the W&M scoring play.

After a quick three plays, the Wildcats punt it away to the 28 yard line and give their defense a shot. Isaiah Ragland rushed twice for a total of 6 yards, plus an incomplete pass.

Tribe Strikes Back, Touchdown! - 7:15 1Q

William & Mary 7 - 7 Villanova

As Tyler Hughes retook control of the ball, William & Mary was able to move the ball down the field consistently in their second drive. After two back-to-back offsides calls on the Villanova defense, they were given a free first down in the first three plays of the drive.

A 16-yard scramble by Hughes showed another one of his strengths for the first time today.

On their 8th play of the drive, a 21-yard completion to deep along the left sideline to Isaiah Lemmond set up W&M inside the redzone.

A few plays later, Tyler Hughes passed it to Tariq Sims for one of his first catches of the day. After the catch, Sims forced three missed tackles and turned on the jets to sneak into the corner by the endzone in an impressive display of athleticism.

Touchdown Villanova! David Avit Up The Middle - 7:22, 1Q

William & Mary 0 - 7 Villanova

David Avit tallies 42 yards in the first drive and a single touchdown, an excellent start for the home team defending their turf.

Villanova Ground Game Gets Going Early - 10:00 1Q

William & Mary 0 - 0 Villanova

Veteran Pat McQuiade and the Villanova Wildcats offense took the field for their first drive of the day.

After three quick gains by David Avit in the first three plays, it looks like he'll be a priority once again after his 135 rushing yards against Monmouth last weekend.

W&M, Hughes Goes To The Air - 12:01 1Q

William & Mary 0 - 0 Villanova

As things get going this afternoon, Tyler Hughes and the William & Mary offense decide to go to the air early. A deep pass down the right complete to Isaiah Lemmond for 26 yards put the Tribe on the right side of the field quickly.

However, after a short play and an incomplete pass, the W&M punted it away to Braden Reed for the fair catch at the 8 yard line.
