A Deep Dive Into Rhode Island Vs Stony Brook Football's 2025 Matchup

In Week 2 of the FCS season, Rhode Island and Stony Brook are facing off. Here's a look at the two teams based on their week one games.

In Week 1, it’s safe to say that both Rhode Island and Stony Brook did not play to the best of their abilities and both programs are looking to bounce back in week two. Though No. 9 Rhode Island beat Campbell, it was a sloppy game, especially in the first half. 

The Seawolves took on FBS San Diego State and fell 42-0, putting together just 95 yards of offense while giving up 464. 

The Rams struggled with turnovers, especially on special teams, giving Campbell the ball with prime field position. Though it was on the field for longer than it hoped, the defense had a solid game, giving up just 268 yards and two touchdowns. 

“We did everything in a football game that can happen in an opener that can prevent you from winning,” Rhode Island head coach Jim Fleming said. 

After a quick start to the game, Rhode Island quickly slowed down, and at one point trailed by 10 points. The Rams gave up 17-straight points thanks to three lost fumbles, but after a stern halftime speech from Flemling, came back out onto the field with a no-nonsense approach. 

For Stony Brook, it was a different story, but they’re looking to get back to winning after playing an FBS opponent. Last season, the Seawolves had a historic turnaround, going from being 0-10 in 2023 to winning eight games. Now, with several key players returning, the Seawolves are looking to be the team to beat in the CAA.

Not only do they have lots of returning talent, but they added several players from all levels of football out of the transfer portal.

Even with all of these, beating the Rams will be a tall task for the Seawolves. 

With the Rams firing on all cylinders, they’re one of the best teams in all of FCS football, not just the CAA. 

“If we do what we’re capable of and we’ll be able to compete with anybody we play,” Fleming said.

With both teams putting their first game jitters behind them, this one should be a dogfight, with two high-powered offenses going up against experienced defenses.
