The Grand Valley State football team is preparing for the 2023 season with a new man in charge.

Following a successful 2022 season that saw Grand Valley State win the GLIAC and make it all the way to the NCAA Division II playoff quarterfinals, head coach Matt Mitchell left to become the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Wisconsin. 

The new man at the helm is Matt Wooster, who was previously the offensive line coach under Mitchell.

Going into the first year as a head coach is never easy, but it will definitely be easier for Wooster given the talent he inherits.

If Wooster wants to replicate the success of his predecessor in his first season, he will have to heavily rely on the talent and leadership of senior quarterback Cade Peterson. 

In 2022, Peterson propelled the team to success by throwing for 2,439 yards and 16 touchdowns along with rushing for 546 yards and seven touchdowns. 

His impressive campaign led to him being named the 2022 GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year along with being put on the first team All-GLIAC list. 

Grand Valley State Starts On The Road Against Colorado School Of Mines

In week one, the Lakers will travel to Golden, Colo. in what will be their only regular season game outside of Michigan. 

Grand Valley State will play Colorado School of Mines, a team that lost in the 2022 Division II National Championship Game. 

The Lakers' schedule won’t get any easier as in Week 6, they will face rival and defending national champion Ferris State.

This matchup has some intrigue as Ferris State knocked them out of the playoffs this past season.
