Hampton Football had a rocky season in the program's first-ever year in the CAA. 

In 2022, the Pirates compiled a record of 4-7, with only one of those wins coming in conference play. 

The one highlight of the season came when Hampton beat archrival Howard 31-28 in the opening game of the season.

5 Things We Learned From CAA Football's Media Day

Head coach Robert Prunty is entering his fifth year at the helm and is hoping to achieve his first winning record since he joined the program in 2018. 

Before taking the job at Hampton, Prunty spent six seasons under Tommy Tuberville at Texas Tech and Cincinnati before coaching at East Carolina as the defensive coordinator.

The Pirates will have continuity at the quarterback position as redshirt junior Malcolm Mays is once again expected to be the starter in the fall.

In 2022, Mays threw for 1,574 yards and 15 touchdowns. 

Hampton Football To Face Four HBCU Programs In 2023

Hampton football will face four of their HBCU counterparts this upcoming season.

 The Pirates season will start in Red Bull Arena as they face HBCU giant Grambling State in the Brick City HBCU Kickoff Classic. 

The Pirates will have another neutral site game in Week 3 at Audi Field in D.C as the team faces their biggest rival, Howard, in the Truth and Service Classic. 

Hampton will also play Norfolk State and new conference foe North Carolina A&T in 2023.
