DeSoto Dismantles Duncanville's National Championship Dreams

Duncanville's dream of a national championship came to a close Saturday with the Panthers 49-35 loss to DeSoto in a battle of reigning Texas state champs.

Duncanville's dream of a national championship came to a close Saturday with the Panthers 49-35 loss to DeSoto in a battle of reigning Texas state champs. The win moves DeSoto from No. 11 to No. 10 in the latest High School Football America 300 national high school football rankings, powered by NFL Play Football. Duncanville tumbles from No. 8 to No. 20 in the latest rankings created with our proprietary algorithm.

No. 1 St. John Bosco (California) now knows its path to its second straight national title. The Braves will open the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs in two weeks against No. 106 San Clemente. A win would send them into the semifinals against the winner of the game between No. 21 Corona Centennial and No. 70 Orange Lutheran.

Waiting on the other side of the bracket is arch-rival Mater Dei, which moves from No. 3 to No. 2 in this week's rankings. The Monarchs will open the playoffs against No. 93 JSerra. Waiting in the semifinals will be the winner of the first round game between No. 14 Sierra Canyon and No. 80 Santa Margarita.

Bishop Gorman drops a notch to No. 3 this week. The Gaels are two wins away from another Nevada state championship. In the state semis, BG plays Coronado (5-5), a team they beat 49-7 two weeks ago. On the other side of the Class 5A Division I bracket is No. 167 Liberty (9-2) and Shadow Ridge (6-4).

Since beating Liberty on 49-6 on September 14, Gorman has rolled past non-ranked Nevada teams with records of 22-28. That strength of schedule has hurt the Gaels, who started the season with wins over No. 21 Corona Centennial (California), No. 25 Miami Central (Florida) No. 47 Corner Canyon (Utah), No. 52 Long Beach Poly (California) and the aforementioned Liberty Patriots.

Indiana’s Ben Davis continues its ascent in the national rankings after handing former No. 52 Brownsburg its first loss of the season in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Giants, who opened the season just outside of the HSFA 300, sits at No. 54 after coming back from a 25-7 deficit against the Bulldogs. BD’s only loss this year came against No. 5 IMG Academy (Florida)
