Maine's Edwards Named STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week

Maine senior wide receiver/kick returner Earnest Edwards has been selected as the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week.

Edwards broke his own program record with 198 kickoff return yards and tied his own CAA mark by returning two kickoffs for TD’s in Maine’s 35-21 victory at Colgate. The senior opened the second half with a record-tying 100-yard return and followed with a 95-yard TD return later in the third quarter. He now has six career kickoff returns for TD’s and owns the Black Bears’ career mark for kickoff return yards with 2,025. In addition, Edwards caught a 40-yard TD pass in the second quarter at Colgate.

STATS also recognized Villanova as its FCS Team of the Week. The 18th-ranked Wildcats improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2009 after pulling out a 52-45 overtime victory at No. 5 Towson last Saturday.

It was the third time this season that CAA Football has received a National Player of the Week award as Villanova junior cornerback Jaquan Amos was honored as Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2 and Elon senior defensive end Marcus Willoughby was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9.

In addition to Edwards’ award, two CAA Football players – Villanova quarterback Daniel Smith (Offensive) and New Hampshire quarterback Max Brosmer (Freshman) received honorable mention for national accolades from STATS.
