Elon's Davis Cheek Headlines Weekly CAA Award Winners

CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 3 of the 2019 season. Earning honors are Elon junior quarterback Davis Cheek, Towson junior safety Steven Brown, Elon sophomore kick returner Shamari Wingard, William & Mary freshman kick returner Bronson Yoder, and William & Mary freshman quarterback Hollis Mathis. 

CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week

Davis Cheek, Jr., QB, Elon (Matthews, N.C./Butler)

Cheek completed 18-of-30 passes for 234 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in Elon’s 42-20 conference road win at Richmond. The junior threw three scoring passes in the first half and added two more on the first two drives of the third quarter to give the Phoenix a commanding 42-13 advantage. Cheek’s TD passes went to five different receivers, and he also added 33 yards rushing. 

CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week

Steven Brown, Jr., S, Towson (Plumas Lake, Calif./East Nicolaus)

Brown recorded a team-high nine tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, and a pass breakup as No. 8 Towson earned a 45-23 road victory at No. 7 Maine. Making his first Towson start, the junior was part of a Tigers’ defense that picked off four passes and held the Black Bears to 68 yards rushing. Towson scored 21 points off the turnovers and ended Maine’s six-game home win streak. 

CAA Football Co-Special Teams Player of the Week

Shamari Wingard, So., KR, Elon (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell)

Wingard returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown in Elon’s 42-20 win at Richmond. With the Phoenix up 14-7 in the second quarter, the sophomore broke loose down the left sideline and went untouched to the end zone. It was Elon’s first kickoff return for a TD since 2007. 

CAA Football Co-Special Teams Player of the Week

Bronson Yoder, Fr., KR, William & Mary (Nappanee, Ind./Northwood)

Yoder returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown in William & Mary’s 38-10 victory over Colgate. With the Tribe ahead 17-10 in the third quarter, Yoder broke several tackles and sprinted down the left sideline. It was W&M’s first kickoff return for a TD since 2015. 

CAA Football Rookie of the Week

Hollis Mathis, Fr., QB, William & Mary (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills)

Mathis accounted for 251 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in William & Mary’s 38-10 triumph over Colgate. The freshman completed 11-of-19 passes for a career-high 189 yards, including a 27-yard strike to Jordan Lowery that gave the Tribe a 17-0 first-quarter lead. He also ran for 62 yards and a score on 13 carries as W&M piled up 443 yards in the game.
