Cover 4: Orange Ya Gonna Ride With Syracuse This Week?
Knock, knock. Who’s there? Orange. Orange, who? Orange ya gonna pick Syracuse to knock off Florida State at the Carrier Dome?
No excuses for last week. No empty promises for this week. Instead, enjoy this knock-knock joke:
Knock, knock. Who’s there? Orange. Orange, who? Orange ya gonna pick Syracuse to knock off Florida State at the Carrier Dome?
SYRACUSE (+3.5) over Florida State
Saturday / 11 AM CT / Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
What’s left to say about Florida State? The Seminoles have no looked really poor in consecutive weeks. Their offensive line—already a weak spot—is dealing with several injuries. Deondre Francois hasn’t looked much like Doeondre Francois. Samford should have beaten them in Tallahassee a week ago, were it not for Devlin Hodges propensity for throwing the ball to dudes in garnet shirts.
Meanwhile, Syracuse (2-0, ATS) just covered as a 45-point favorite against Wagner, has some dude named Eric Dungey at quarterback (ever heard of him?) and really ought to have a relatively vintage Carrier Dome crowd for this one. The Orange get someone at home every year it seems, though typically as a huge underdog. They’re not a huge underdog in this one. In fact, Dino Babers’ team really shouldn’t be an underdog at all.
North Texas (+7.5) over ARKANSAS
Saturday / 3 PM CT / Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, Fayetteville, AR
Through two blowout victories, North Texas quarterback Mason Fine has thrown for 862 yards and seven touchdowns against just one interception. In the Mean Green’s season-opening win against an SMU squad that blew them out a year ago, Fine completed 40-of-50 throws for 444 yards and three touchdowns without a pick.
That’s bad news for an Arkansas secondary that just got shredded by Colorado State’s KJ Carta-Samuels a week after allowing Eastern Illinois’ quarterback duo of Johnathan Brantley and Harry Woodbery to complete 68 percent of their throws for 230 yards and three touchdowns without a pick.
UL-Monroe (+27.5) over TEXAS A&M
Saturday / 6:30 PM CT / Kyle Field, College Station, TX
Texas A&M was extremely impressive in its 28-26 loss to Clemson last week, so this isn’t a knock against the Aggies. This is just a tough spot.
Louisiana-Monroe is a solid Group of Five opponent—one that’s riding high after last week’s come-from-behind victory at Southern Miss pushed the Warhawks to 2-0 on the year—and the Aggies are bound to be a little flat after leaving it all out on the field against the Tigers on Saturday night—not to mention Alabama waiting on the other side of a bye.
A cover, here, would be yet another impressive feat for Jimbo Fisher and his staff.
Colorado State (+20) over FLORIDA
Saturday / 3 PM CT / Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville, FL
This one’s a Bratke Special.
He’s been on Colorado State since basically the end of the third quarter of last week’s victory over Arkansas, coupled with Florida’s relatively resounding defeat, at home, at the hands of Kentucky. He’s a man of conviction and he’s sticking to his guns—a true American hero.
Florida hasn’t covered in seven of its past nine games—including five straight—when favored by 20 points or more against an FBS opponent.
If you’re not feeling some of our picks this week, here’s a few bonus suggestions that we’ll undoubtedly attempt to take full credit for in the event that they’re winners: Pitt (+3.5), Army (-6.5) and Boise State (money line).
