Weekend Walkthrough: UMass Kicks Off Season Against Duquesne

Each week, we’ll help you get mentally prepared for all of the action on FloFootball because we’re thoughtful that way.

It’s week zero, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some heroes-in-waiting. UMass and Duquesne are set to kick off the whole thing on Saturday at 5:30 PM ET.

Here’s what you need to know:

What: Duquesne (0-0) vs. UMass (0-0)

When: Saturday, Aug. 25 at 5:30 PM ET

Where: McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, Mass.

Where to Watch: Right here, obviously.

Where to Be Social: @FloFootball, @UMassFootball, @DuqFB

Sound brilliant by bringing some of this up:

It’s Been A Long Road For Bryton Barr

Today, Barr is star returner who racked up a team-leading 105 tackles last season—his first with the Minutemen.

But, prior to heading to Amherst, Barr actually spent five seasons at Towson where repeated injuries nearly derailed his career entirely. The UMass linebacker is a walking embodiment of perseverance.

Uncharted Territory For The Dukes

The game against UMass is just the second time in program history that Duquesne has taken on an FBS opponent. What’s more, the Aug. 25 date is the earliest the Dukes have ever played a regular season game.

Keep An Eye On Andy Isabella

The 5-10, 195-pound senior made 38 of his 65 receptions over the Minutemen’s final six games of 2017, piling up 625 yards and seven scores.

He will enter Saturday ranked No. 3 on the all-time touchdown receptions list at UMass and—along with running back Marquis Young—is one of two returners who rank in the Top 10 in program history for total touchdowns.

Don’t Sleep On The Dukes

Duquesne remains a 23-point underdog as we creep closer to kickoff, which is a big number for a UMass team that has never covered a spread during the month of August.

More importantly, the Dukes bring back plenty of firepower from a season ago, including all five All-NEC performers: running back AJ Hines, wide receiver Nehari Crawford, left tackle Alex Conley, right guard Matt Fitzpatrick and cornerback Jonathant Istache.
