Good news came for the Virginia Tech program and its supporters today.
After nearly two weeks of waiting for an academic issue to be resolved, it was determined that sophomore quarterback Josh Jackson is in good standing with the university and will remain a member of the football team.
Rumors began to swirl primarily on social media that Jackson was academically ineligible, but that turned out to be fake college football news news.
Jackson’s productivity on the field may be falsely ridiculed too often, especially if you look at his numbers compared to other freshmen from last year.
As a redshirt freshman last season, he threw for 2,991 yards, which led FBS freshmen, all while leading the Hokies to a 9-4 record. His 20 touchdown passes were second only to Georgia’s Jake Fromm.
On top of the damage done with his arm, Jackson also proved to be a dual-threat, rushing for 324 yards and six touchdowns.
Despite the criticism Jackson often receives from some fans in Blacksburg, those numbers aren’t too shabby for a 3-star recruit, who was ranked 426th in his class.
Even with Ryan Willis, a transfer from Kansas, coming in this offseason, Jackson is still expected to start in the Hokies’ season opener against ACC foe Florida State—and rightfully so.
The Justin Fuente era looks as if it will continue to trend in the right direction.
