Nunzio Campanile Reportedly Leaving Bergen Catholic For Rutgers
Bergen Catholic head coach Nunzio Campanile is leaving the school to become the new running backs coach at Rutgers.
With the chaos of the Super Bowl and National Signing Day, it would be easy to overlook a report about a Rutgers assistant coaching hire, but not when it involves Nunzio Campanile.
The Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic head coach is reportedly leaving BC to become the Scarlet Knights’ running backs coach.
The Crusaders are coming off of a 10-2 season that ended with a No. 21 ranking in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25. Despite the team’s success, however, Campanile is a name most nationally may overlook, so here’s the background (and why this hire matters).
Campanile is widely considered to be New Jersey’s top high school football mind. His offense drew acclaim while he was an assistant at Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep. At Bergen Catholic, he emerged as one of the most well-respected people in the sport, which has led to multiple appearances as a coach in the Under Armour All-American game.
In theory, by adding Campanile to his staff, Rutgers head coach Chris Ash — whose staff has been criticized for its lack of local ties — has suddenly well-established itself within the state with one of the faces of Garden State high school football, particularly in North Jersey.

Not for nothing, Campanile will also offer a source of comfort in the recruitment of Bergen Catholic linebacker Javontae Jean-Baptiste — the 2017 New Jersey Defensive Player of the Year and a priority target for Rutgers.
Aside from the regional play, adding a figure like Campanile has the potential to energize the program — and its resonance in the recruiting landscape — with a clear vision of a best-case scenario being provided by the career arcs of former high school coaches such as Gus Malzahn and Chad Morris.
