Today I Learned: The No. 2 Is Cursed
The No. 2 team in college football was always doomed, Saquon Barkley signed with Roc Nation, OU Heisman winners lose to SEC teams.
The final week of the bowl season was an educational one, to say the least.
From Oklahoma’s unfortunate relationship with the number two to Auburn’s inability to escape Atlanta, here’s what we’ve learned during the past few days.
The Curse of the Deuce
Thanks to Reddit user drnbrgr, I now know that the number two — my favorite number, by the way, shoutout to Charles Woodson and Deion Sanders — was inflicted with a menacing curse in 2017.
Long story short, each week after a team earned the No. 2 spot in the Associated Press poll this season, it was doomed to lose. Here’s the post if you’re so inclined.
From weeks 1-14, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson, Penn State, Georgia, Miami, and again Oklahoma fell victim to the Curse of the Deuce in successive order.
Roc Nation Is The Real Running Back U
On Wednesday, Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, widely considered to be the top running back prospect in recent memory, announced that he has signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports agency.
Barring anything unforeseen, this will be the third time in four years that the top running back selected in the NFL Draft is represented by Roc Nation. Jay’s agency also reps league MVP candidate Todd Gurley and Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette — selected 10th and fourth overall in their respective drafts.
‘My Own Prison’ (Auburn Remix)
Auburn will open the 2018 regular season at — you guessed it! — Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. It will be the third consecutive game in Atlanta’s football palace for Gus Malzahn and the Tigers.
Of course, all this means is that Auburn will have played in the SEC Championship, the Peach Bowl, and the Chick-fil-A Kickoff in successive games — which is pretty awesome. It’s just that, you know, those first two contests in Atlanta didn’t go so well.
UCF's McKenzie Milton: 'Cancel The Playoff'
Safe to say the Tigers will be glad to be back at Jordan Hare Stadium in week two for a Sept. 8 matchup with juggernaut Alabama… State.
The Past Three Oklahoma Heisman Winners Shared The Same Fate
For Jason White, Sam Bradford, and, now, Baker Mayfield, the postseason recipe has been the same: win the Heisman, then lose to an SEC school with a national title on the line.
White lost to LSU in the 2003 BCS National Championship. Bradford lost to Florida in the 2008 BCS National Championship. And, of course, on Monday, Mayfield lost to Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl.
The already increasingly uncomfortable blank space on the Oklahoma press box is beginning to look really ominous.
