Midway Is A Win Away From The Title Game — But Longview Is A Problem

The Longview playoff run has provided some fantastic theater alongside some impressive performances — not the least of which have occurred in each of the Lobos appearances on FloFootball.

After dominating West Brook and Dallas Jesuit in the first two rounds, Longview bounced back from an early deficit to run past Klein Collins and erased a late deficit to take a thriller last week against rival Lufkin. Now the Lobos are turning their attention to Waco Midway in a Texas UIL 6A-2 semifinal clash on Saturday at Eagle Stadium in Allen.

Quarterback Haynes King has been steady for Longview all postseason long — with a side order of clutch — and playmakers such as Kamden Perry, Keilyn Williams, and Jaylin Brown have stepped up and played big in big spots.

Perry has caught six or more passes in three of the Lobos’ four playoff games, including eight grabs for 115 yards and two touchdowns vs. Lufkin.

Williams rushed for 284 yards through the team’s first two playoff games — and will enter Saturday’s semifinal with 417 rushing yards and five touchdowns in postseason play.

Offensively, the Lobos have been good-to-great. That’s the good news. But if Longview is going to earn a 15th victory and a spot in the state title game, head coach John King’s team is likely going to have to play its best game of the season on Saturday.

In case you’ve been sleeping under a rock, Waco Midway is for real.

The Panthers were winning close early in the season, but they’ve been on a warpath for the better part of nine weeks with only Southlake Carroll providing any semblance of a challenge.

Midway quarterback Tanner Mordecai has been as good as advertised along the way, throwing for 1,294 total yards and having a hand in 20 touchdowns through Midway’s first four postseason games.

A week after completing 77 percent of his throws for 245 yards and three scores in a win over Mansfield, the Oklahoma commit rushed for 114 yards and four touchdowns last week against Southlake Carroll.

Mordecai is kept upright by an outstanding offensive line, led by tackle Kaitori Leveston — a Kansas State pledge — and guard Hakeem White, who’s bound for Texas Tech. Tight end David Priebe is a versatile player who is both physical in the running game and gifted as a pass catcher.

The Panthers’ dual-threat quarterback isn’t alone on the ground, either. Junior running back James Fullbright is nearing the 1,700-yard mark for the season after going for 140 yards or more in three of the team’s four playoff games.

After getting gashed a little bit by Copperas Cove in week five, Midway's defense has tightened up significantly. And, with an offense that’s averaging 47 points per game, a bend-but-don’t-break approach is perfect complementary football.

Of course, just as the Panthers’ offense will pose a significant challenge to the Longview defense, the Lobos’ playmakers — and a quarterback who avoids mistakes — will be no small threat to Midway.

We’re not breaking any news by saying that both of these teams have what it takes to reach the finish line. At this point in the season, everyone is good and everyone is a threat. Who will still be playing this time next week is anyone’s guess, but one thing is certain: This game is a must-see.

Can’t make it to Allen? Don’t worry. We’ll bring the action to you live on FloFootball. In fact, Midway-Longview will be preceded by Allen-Cedar Ridge. So kick back, relax, and enjoy the best of the UIL semifinal round.
