Mike Bloomgren To Be Named Head Coach At Rice
Rice to hire Stanford's Mike Bloomgren as next head football coach.
Stanford offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren will be named the next head coach at Rice.
Bloomgren, who has helped lead one of the most formidable offenses in the country since joining the Cardinal in 2011, will take over a program with very similar ideologies — if altogether different competitive realities over the course of the past decade.
Bloomgren joined the Cardinal in 2011 as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator after four seasons as the assistant offensive coordinator with the New York Jets. He would eventually become the outright play-caller and associate head coach at Stanford.
Rice athletic director Joe Karlgaard is a Stanford alum, further reinforcing the fit.
Under Bloomgren, Rice will likely attack opponents with the same sort of power run attack that Stanford has become famous for during the program's ascent near the top of the college football world.
