Prosper Seeks Revenge In Playoff Rematch With Wakeland
Frisco Wakeland and Prosper meet in the first round of the UIL Texas State Playoffs for the second time in as many seasons.
Deja vu? The Prosper Eagles hope not. They'll be out here lookin' for revenge.
The Eagles (8-2) met Frisco Wakeland (7-3) in the bi-district round of the Texas state playoffs a season ago and watched as their 2016 campaign came to an end. A year later, the two teams are facing off once again to open the 5A-D2 postseason on Thursday at Eagle Stadium in Allen.
In last year's game, Prosper and Wakeland were almost dead even in the box score — the Wolverines totaled 280 yards and 15 first downs to the Eagles' 279 yards and 14 first downs — but the 20-9 final score seemed to suggest a sounder defeat. In reality, Wakeland quarterback Cooper Chandler was “held” to 198 yards one passing touchdown (he entered averaging 312 yards and four touchdowns per game in his previous five outings) and the Wolverines’ defense played well enough to win.
A year later, Chandler is gone — replaced by junior Dylan Cadwallader, who has been largely spectacular. Cadwallader has completed 67 percent of his throws for 2,581 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just six interceptions this season.
Cadwallader will face a stingy defense in Prosper, a unit that allowed just 13.6 points per game en route to eight wins and the team's second District 14-5A championship.
With the title on the line last week against Lake Dallas, the Eagles were dominant, allowing just 151 total yards and 1.2 yards per carry to an offense that entered the game averaging better than 38 points per game in district play.
If Prosper is to avoid back-to-back first-round exits at the hands of the same opponent, head coach Brandon Schmidt’s defense will want to duplicate the pressure it was able to apply to Lake Dallas quarterback Ryan Depperschmidt, who was dropped for six sacks and harassed constantly while managing just 115 yards in his team's 49-7 loss last week.
If it feels like the stage is being set for the ‘ole unstoppable force (in this case, Cadwallader) vs. the immovable object (the Prosper defense), that’s because it absolutely is.
The game is being held at Allen’s 18,000-seat Eagle Stadium and kicks off at 7:30 PM CT. For those disinterested in combating DFW rush hour(s) traffic on a Thursday night, the game is streaming live on FloFootball.com and the FloSports app.
