Coaches Say The Darnedest Things: Week 12 Edition
Coaches Say The Darnedest Things: Week 12 Edition
A curated handful of the best moments from this week's head coach press conferences.
Press conferences — particularly those involving head football coaches — are often a half-hour of mundane coach-speak that will put even the most interested football fan to sleep.
On the other hand, a handful of moments exist each week within these otherwise innocuous hours of cliches and understatements that make the whole exercise worthwhile.
The good news, for you, is that we suffered through the bland to curate the interesting — starting with a tattletale in Athens.
Kirby Smart Responds To Gus Malzahn’s Postgame Comment — Sort Of
After Auburn’s decisive victory over Georgia on Saturday, AU head coach Gus Malzahn was excited. He said “dog crap.” Very controversial. On Monday, some nark tattled to UGA's Kirby Smart:
Smart didn’t take the bait at all. So we can add this clip to the growing list of things I love about Georgia’s football coach.
Lane Kiffin Takes A Shot At Florida & Florida State
Unfortunately, as a society it appears as though we failed miserably at catching this comment with a camera, but I’m including it anyway because, well, Lane’s gonna Lane:
Lane Kiffin: "Who woulda thought we'd be sitting here with more wins than Florida and Florida State combined?"

Truth.
If you’ve ever wondered how the rest of the FBS coaching world feels about Lane Kiffin, I recommend you just spontaneously read one of his tweets aloud to another head coach sometime. If your experience is similar to mine, it’ll make you wonder who this dude hangs out with at coaching conventions.
Tom Herman Calls Will Grier Big 12’s Best Quarterback
OK, that’s a little misleading. Tom Herman calls Grier “along the lines” of Baker Mayfield.
So petty. So laughable. I love it or I hate it, and I literally cannot decide.
Everything Is Cool With Nebraska Football — Well, Except For The Games
Mike Riley is, by all accounts, a phenomenal guy. It is absolutely not my intent to pile on. That being said, he kind of walked into this one…
I, for one, hope that the games get better for Riley and the 4-6 Cornhuskers the rest of the way.
‘Well, My, My, My…’ Here’s Your Obligatory Mike Leach Clip
Sadly, Leach didn’t provide any gems about his favorite burger spots or mascots this week. But I ran across this clip from two weeks ago, and I literally couldn’t believe the nerve of this writer.
This exchange with a reporter on the phone wins the day from the Leach press conference. #WellMyMyMy pic.twitter.com/AJCaIHi2hy

Bro, for starters, it’s a press conference — not a ride home from the airport. Get over yourself. Pretty safe to assume that the head football coach at Washington State is juggling a few more daily obligations than you are. It’s a Monday morning. You’re not up against a deadline.
Also, you’re not even there. And, presumably, your job is to write things. You can’t write while you wait? I’m writing this right now at some random coffee shop in Allen, Texas, while I wait for a high school football practice to start. Computers are portable these days. It’s crazy.
Hilarious that after all of that, his big, life-altering question was just a question about the quarterback that Leach answered without him noticing.
