St. John’s Has Inside Track To First WCAC Title
St. John's (DC) aims for first-ever Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title as the Cadets take on DeMatha (MD) in Saturday's semifinals.
It seems like everybody beat everybody in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference — but nobody beat St. John’s (DC).
Our Lady of Good Counsel (MD) knocked off DeMatha (MD) and Gonzaga (DC) en route to a surprise second-place finish. Gonzaga beat DeMatha, which went 0-3 against the league’s semifinal squads. St. John’s ran the table.
This group of Cadets players — led by the likes of players like Kevin Doyle, DJ Brown, and Cam Goode — is the first to beat league powerhouse DeMatha in 23 years.
Heading into Saturday's WCAC semifinals, this St. John's team could become the first to beat DeMatha twice in one year in long enough that no one is sure if it’s ever happened.

Two more wins and the Cadets will have their first WCAC title in modern history — last winning a league known as the Metro Conference in 1989.
Good Counsel and/or DeMatha have appeared in the league championship in every season for the past two decades — and with the pair seeded Nos. 2 and 4, respectively, this could be the 21st consecutive year.
But if anyone should take the crown other than St. John’s — which has outscored the rest of the WCAC’s final four 101-45 this season — it will be an upset.
