Caylin Newton Continues To Make His Own Name

Caylin Newton, younger brother of Cam Newton, is trying to make his own name at Howard.

"Thirteen."

On a scale of 1-10, that's how sick Howard quarterback Caylin Newton is of being asked about his older brother, Cam. So we didn't. Sort of.

When you're a true freshman and your older brother is Cam Newton -- one of the greatest college quarterbacks of all time and the only player of the modern era to win the Heisman Trophy, a national title, and be drafted No. 1 in the same year -- it's kind of hard to avoid the obvious comparison.

But Cam isn't Caylin and Caylin isn't Cam. Not really.

For starters, Cam is 6-foot-5, while Caylin checks in at just 5-foot-11. Cam was the No. 2 dual-threat QB prospect in the country coming out of Atlanta Westlake (GA). Caylin was the No. 133 athlete in the country at Atlanta Grady. Cam chose Florida -- and later Auburn -- over programs such as Oklahoma and Georgia. Caylin chose Howard over Hampton and Kentucky Christian.

But, aside from the six-inch height discrepancy and the stark difference in their respective prospect profiles -- not a coincidence, by the way -- the brothers are extremely similar. They share a similar appearance because, well, the whole being siblings thing. They also play similar games. Both of them are equipped with a big arm and the wherewithal to use it. Both of them are elusive -- but physical -- runners.

"I wouldn't say we're 'different,'" Caylin says. "We're both competitors who just want to win."

That's coach-speak from a college freshman who handles the media like a seasoned professional as he prepares to make his eighth college start when Howard (4-3) plays at South Carolina State (2-5) on Saturday in Orangeburg, SC.

Caylin is as difficult to read as he is to tackle. There's a very earnest admiration for his older brother in his tone, and he's reluctant to request that a line be drawn between himself and Cam. But there's also a Division I starting quarterback who's tired of seeing headlines where "Caylin Newton" is spelled "Cam Newton's brother."

"I'm just waiting on the day where I work hard enough that my name can be in a sentence by itself," he says.

In the meantime, the youngest Newton says he's honed the ability to "find motivation from all over," though he's careful not to attribute that motivation to being overlooked by college recruiters or living in the shadow of Superman.

"I'm at my best when I'm just doing my thing," he says. "I don't worry about all of that other stuff. All I care about is winning. I know that's boring"

Boring? Sure. But equally impressive.

Winners in three of their past four games, Newton and Howard are set to take on South Carolina State this week. More specifically, Newton's offense will be charged with the task of chipping away at a defense led by the MEAC's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, linebacker Darius Leonard.

By now, you can probably guess the ever-collected Newton's level of excitability as it pertains to meeting Leonard and the Bulldogs.

"We're not afraid of anyone," he says. "At the end of the day, we're not going out there like 'Wow, this guy is this person and he's so good.' They put on their pants just like we do. We just need to execute."

Caylin and the Bison will square off with SC State on Saturday at 1:30 PM ET on FloFootball. Caylin Newton's brother plays at Tampa Bay the following day.
