Baker Mayfield Basically Rolled Out Of Bed & Tossed For 410 vs. K-State
Baker Mayfield didn't practice at all, then threw for 410 yards in win vs. Kansas State.
Coaches' press conferences aren't typically must-see material. For the most part, it's a half-hour of coach-speak and local reporters lobbing softball questions that elicit vague, uninspiring responses.
Not so cool.
But sometimes -- well, most of the time if you're watching Washington State's Mike Leach speak -- something noteworthy will emerge from all the droning about taking what the defense gives you and playing a full 60 minutes. At Oklahoma, today was one of those days.
In the Sooners' 42-35 come-from-behind win against Kansas State on Saturday, Baker Mayfield was 32 of 41 for 410 yards, two touchdowns, and one pick and carried nine times for 69 yards and two scores on the ground. Great numbers -- but numbers we've come to expect from No. 6.
Oh, except for Mayfield didn't practice at all last week. He just showed up to the ball yard in Manhattan, KS, like...
That fun little fact came to light today, during OU head coach Lincoln Riley's press conference (skip to 3:40 for the good stuff):
So, yeah. Ole gunslingin' Baker Mayfield, the pride of Lake Travis, Texas, might've looked like the guy who, on his own merit, is worth the price of admission. But he didn't even take a practice rep before strolling into the unfriendly confines of Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium. He basically just rolled out of bed, tossed for 410 yards, and led a comeback victory in one of the toughest venues in all of college football.
"He probably doesn't get the appreciation he deserves," Riley said. "To be able to go out and play the way he did against another really, really good Kansas State defense that gives everyone problems, yeah, I don't know what else you can say about it. It's pretty remarkable, honestly. It really is. People should take notice of that and not take it for granted."
Others might take it for granted, Coach, but not us. No sir. Give me Baker Mayfield over any other quarterback in the country -- and any other quarterback in Oklahoma's storied history, for that matter.
