Georgia picked up a recommitment Thursday from Rome (GA) standout Adam Anderson -- the No. 3 outside linebacker and No. 43 overall player, per the 247Sports Composite. Then, for an encore, head coach Kirby Smart choppered over to Kennesaw, GA, to watch recent UGA pledge Justin Fields, the top-ranked player in the country -- and highest-rated quarterback prospect since Vince Young.

Smart just descended from the heavens in a helicopter. Like a boss.

The Bulldogs now have as many as eight of the top 300 players in the country, depending on your preferred source for recruit rankings, including the top-ranked quarterback (Fields) and the top-ranked running back, Scotland County's (NC) Zamir White. That's good enough for the No. 6 overall class ranking -- tops in the SEC.

That's right. Better than 'Bama.

Smart isn't playing. And he isn't done. If the Dawgs land even half of their remaining targets, they'll be looking at one of the most highly touted classes in school history.

Georgia is the favorite to sign top-ranked guards Jamaree Salyer and Trey Hill, No. 3 running back James Cook, and No. 4 safety Tyreke Johnson -- a coup that would undoubtedly improve its puncher's chance at securing the services of the nation's top two defensive ends Micah Parsons and KJ Henry, second-ranked tight end Luke Ford, and fifth-ranked outside linebacker Channing Tindall.

Looking ahead to 2019, the Bulldogs already have commitments from Jadon Haselwood and Dominick Blaylock -- the top-ranked wide receivers in the class -- along with third-ranked defensive end Nolan Smith from IMG Academy, and Smart and co. are the favorites to land one of the highest-rated linebackers ever, Grayson's (GA) Owen Pappoe.

Oh, and then there's what's actually happening on the field for Georgia this year.

The Dawgs won on the road at Notre Dame, which seems like a bigger deal now than it did at the time, then crushed Mississippi State the week after Dan Mullen's squad blasted LSU and became -- but for a moment -- very on trend. In the past three weeks, Georgia has dominated SEC East also-rans Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Missouri by a combined score of like 900-14 or something.

The toughest remaining game separating the third-ranked Bulldogs from a Super Bowl SEC Championship matchup with Alabama is a Nov. 11 road trip to Auburn, which so happens to be the only ranked team left on Georgia's schedule.

Smart is now 15-5 after just over a season and a half in Athens, GA. The man he replaced, Mark Richt, is 14-4 at Miami over the same course of time. Both coaches will lead undefeated, College Football Playoff contending teams out of the tunnel on Saturday. Sometimes a fresh start works to the benefit of all parties involved.

Smart, for his part, has injected a new energy into the program at Georgia that, frankly, no one's felt since maybe the Matt Stafford-to-AJ Green days. The difference, here, I think, is that the Bulldogs are winning big right now with a team that, save for a veteran backfield and a core of seniors on defense, seems to be doing so ahead of schedule.

Quarterback Jake Fromm is a freshman, who was just supposed to manage the offense while Jacob Eason was on the mend. Fromm threw for 326 yards and scored three times in last week's 53-28 win over Mizzou and has effectively stolen the job -- for now.

Running back D'Andre Swift has given folks a glimpse of life after Nick Chubb and Sony Michel -- a future made even brighter by the knowledge that White and likely Cook are on the way. White is an early enrollee who will join the Dawgs in January.

And, make no mistake, the Georgia defense is very good and very experienced right now, but if its juniors return for their senior seasons, the group could return as many as six starters with young impact players like freshman defensive backs Richard LeCounte III and DeAngelo Gibbs chomping at the bit.

Bringing Smart -- he of 13 career interceptions as a Bulldog -- back to Athens was just, well, smart. He's the perfect coach at the perfect time. And for a program that is habitually almost good enough, the futures stock in Georgia football is soaring right about now. We've all been waiting for a challenger to Alabama to emerge from the East, and it finally looks as though we may have one.

The Dawgs are the hero college football deserves.
