Teradja Mitchell Is A Nightmare For Opposing Offenses

Bishop Sullivan Catholic (VA) linebacker Teradja Mitchell is one of the most disruptive high school defenders in the country heading into his senior year. Committed to Ohio State, the 247Sports Composite four-star prospect makes highlight-reel plays look routine and serves a constant, massive, "call into work with a migraine-sized" headache to opposing coaches and coordinators.

Blocking assignments that work against every other defense on the schedule don't work against Bishop Sullivan because of Mitchell.

Don't believe me? Just watch.

Unfortunately for the ball carrier, it doesn't appear as though anyone is doing much blocking on this play. Even more unfortunate is the fact that the center gets lost and hesitates in his pursuit of Mitchell, who blows past him and makes the tackle 4 yards deep.

A linebacker running untouched through the A-gap isn't a recipe for success for any offensive play. Nor is it a particularly good way to judge the play of the linebacker -- the game is much easier when no one is blocking you. That said, Mitchell doesn't just run through the gap: He explodes through it, beats the ball to the back, and then just destroys everything. Unreal.

Mitchell is accounted for on this play -- in theory. The pulling guard is supposed to handle the play-side inside linebacker. And, frankly, that blocking scheme probably works against virtually every other linebacker on this team's schedule. Just not Teradja Mitchell.

It's tough to blame the ball carrier for bouncing this, but the tackle never has a chance to reach Mitchell once the play goes outside. He's just too fast and too aggressive to bottle up if there's any hesitation at all on the part of the blocker.

This is why Mitchell is one of the most highly touted linebacker prospects in the country. Nothing goes wrong for the offense. Everything is blocked up. It's Mitchell and the guard -- and the guard is in great position. None of it matters. Mitchell blows him up and spoils a play that otherwise had some potential.

Again, this is just Mitchell wreaking havoc where an average player would not. With jet motion and a speed sweep to a wide receiver, the concern isn't even supposed to be inside. It's zone blocked and the edge is typically a given. Mitchell atypically drops the ball carrier for a 6-yard loss.
