Huntley Named Utes Starter Over Bateman, Williams
Tyler Huntley wins the starting quarterback job at Utah ahead of the Utes' season opener against North Dakota on Aug. 31 in Salt Lake City.
In what concludes one of the most hotly contested quarterback competitions of the summer, Utah has officially announced that sophomore Tyler Huntley will start for the Utes in their season opener against North Dakota on Aug. 31 in Salt Lake City.
Huntley was, at times, seen as a dark horse candidate if only due to the resumes of the other two quarterbacks: Cooper Bateman and Troy Williams.
Williams, a returning starter, was voted captain in 2016. Bateman spent the past two seasons at Alabama, where he completed 74 percent of his passes for 410 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games.
Huntley, a Hallandale, FL, native, was a three-star prospect out of Hallandale High School in the class of 2016. He was named Florida's Gatorade Player of the Year after throwing for 3,636 yards with 42 touchdowns.
Huntley saw very limited action as a freshman until Utah's 26-24 win over Indiana in the Foster Farms Bowl, a game in which he rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown on eight carries -- and completed his only pass for 36 yards. Though adept as a runner, Huntley was the 23rd-ranked pocket passer out of high school and has said he does not anticipate taking a scramble-heavy approach in the Utah offense this season.
