Tricks-And-Treats: 10 Of The Scariest Things That Could Happen In D2 Football On Halloween

Halloween is scary. But Week 9 of D2 football? That's downright terrifying.

With only a few weeks remaining in the regular season, stakes are rising and tricks are almost guaranteed. I’m not talking “jumping spider” tricks; I’m talking “8-foot zombie from Spirit Halloween jumping out at you on your morning trip to work” tricks.

Seventy-nine NCAA D2 football games will be played on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026. If your team has been doing well thus far - Congratulations! You can set out a bowl of candy that says “Take One” and enjoy watching them pull out another win. If your team has a losing record, well, Halloween is the perfect time to pretend you’re not!

A lot of scary things could happen this Halloween, but here are 10 of the spookiest things that could happen in D2 football in Week 9.

No. 1 Ferris State vs. No. 9 Davenport Ends In A Draw

The only thing scarier than an upset is a tie game. The only thing scarier than a tie game is a draw between two unbeaten opponents.

We rarely see ties in college football, but it can happen. In fact, it already happened once this year, when Colorado School of Mines and Washburn ended in a 16-16 tie due to dangerous extreme-heat conditions. Per the NCAA, a D2 football game will only be suspended due to extreme weather or safety concerns.

No. 1 Ferris State hosts No. 9 Davenport at 1 p.m. ET on Halloween. Both teams are undefeated. Ferris State's 38-game win streak is on the line, and Davenport could solidify the best season in program history with a 9-0 record and the largest upset in history. This matchup also decides the GLIAC regular season champion, and I don't think a draw will get in the way of that.

The forecast in Big Rapids, Mich., on Saturday, Oct. 31, is predicted to be cloudy and mild, with a high of 59ºF and a 10% chance of rain. With that being said, something extremely spooky would have to happen for the Calder City Classic to end in a tie. I’m talking zombie apocalypse-level spooky.

Tre Nichols Throws An Interception; Northwestern Oklahoma State Turns It Into A Game-Winning Pick Six

No. 25 Ouachita Baptist quarterback Tre Nichols has yet to be picked off this season (knock on wood), going 90-for-137 for 1,339 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season. The Tigers are 4-0 on the road this season and 6-2 overall.

Northwestern Oklahoma State has a much different story. They’re 0-8 overall and have intercepted just three passes all season, none of which have been returned for a touchdown.

The only thing scarier than a Rangers pick is a Rangers pick-six, and the only thing scarier than that lives in Goosebumps by R.L. Stine.

Roosevelt Spooks Grand Valley State

This might just be Grand Valley State's nightmare.

Grand Valley State has had an unfortunate few weeks, losing three consecutive conference games for the first time since 2011. Their losses were at the hands of No. 23 Michigan Tech in Week 6 (41-35, OT), No. 1 Ferris State in Week 7 (41-34) and Saginaw Valley State in Week 8 (27-20). Saginaw Valley’s win against GVSU was their first back-to-back win against the Lakers since 1984-85.

Roosevelt hasn’t been hot, either. They started the season similarly to GVSU, going undefeated through their first four games. Michigan Tech handed them a 57-28 loss to open GLIAC play; they bounced back with a 33-18 win at winless Wayne State (MI) in Week 6. They dropped the last two matchups, one to previously 0-7 Northern Michigan.

Both teams sit at 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the GLIAC; GVSU leads the series 2-0 with the most recent win being decided 69-13. For the Lakers in blue, a loss at the hands of Roosevelt would be worse than getting an apple in your trick-or-treating bag.

Kentucky Wesleyan Haunts Hillsdale

Kentucky Wesleyan is 0-8 overall with six losses in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The Panthers have been outscored 381-79 by their opponents through eight games; their closest loss to a D2 team was a 21-point deficit to William Jewell.

This week, KWC hosts Hillsdale (5-3, 3-3), who leads the series 7-1 since 2017. All seven wins have been decided by 19 or more points.

A Panthers win would be nothing but a treat for Kentucky Wesleyan, but Hillsdale would view this as its most chilling Halloween to date.

Northwood Gets Knocked Off By Ashland

Northwood = still undefeated. Ashland = trying to stay in the W column.

The No. 8 Timberwolves are on the prowl for win number nine this season. Kicker Drew Cady called game in Week 8 versus Ohio Dominican, drilling a 43-yard field goal as time expired to close out the 37-35 win for Northwood. They may have been spooked in Week 8, but there’s no doubt they’re back for blood in Week 9.

Ashland holds a 27-13-1 advantage in the all-time series between the two, winning the last 13 games straight. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Ashland outplays Northwood, but it would be a spooky sight for our FloCollege D2 Football Rankings crew. After all, Ashland is 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the G-MAC this season; this would be a major upset.

Gunnar Hensley Throws For Less Than 250 Yards

Augustana (SD) quarterback Gunnar Hensley leads NCAA D2 in passing yards, throwing for 2,768 yards and 25 touchdowns on the season. He averages 346 yards per game with a game-high 449 in the season-opener versus Missouri Western. His lowest yardage of the season came in Week 8 versus Southwest Minnesota State, where he “only” threw for 244 yards.

The Vikings head to Aberdeen, S.D. for a Week 9 matchup at Northern State. The Wolves are also 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the Northern Sun (NSIC). They rank third in the conference in defense and ninth (of 14) in passing defense, allowing just under 200 yards per game this season.

I’d be impressed if Northern State can limit Hensley to less than 300 yards, but I’d be downright spooked if they could hold him to 250 or less.

Every Undefeated Team Loses

This isn’t even possible, so we’d be really scared.

There are only 10 perfect teams left in D2 football. All 10 see action in Week 9, but two of these teams, Davenport and Ferris State, face each other. Obviously, upsets happen, but nine top-10 upsets to take down nearly every unbeaten team? Now that’s scary.

Here’s who each undefeated team plays on Saturday, Oct. 31.

No. 1 Ferris State (8-0, 4-0) vs. No. 9 Davenport (8-0, 5-0)

No. 2 Harding (8-0, 8-0) vs. Oklahoma Baptist (3-5, 3-5)

No. 3 CSU Pueblo (8-0, 6-0) vs. Black Hills State (5-3, 3-3)

No. 4 Slippery Rock (8-0, 7-0) vs. Clarion (4-4, 2-3)

No. 5 Kutztown (8-0, 6-0) vs. No. 19 East Stroudsburg (7-1, 5-1)

No. 6 Minnesota State (8-0, 7-0) vs. Southwest Minnesota State (1-7, 0-7)

No. 7 Western Colorado (8-0, 6-0) vs. South Dakota Mines (5-3, 3-3)

No. 8 Northwood (8-0, 6-0) vs. Ashland (3-5, 3-3)

No. 10 Emporia State (8-0, 6-0) vs. No. 11 Northwest Missouri State (6-1, 5-1)

Pace Is No Longer Perfect In The NE10

Scary for Pace University, a treat for every other NE10 team!

The Setters are coming off a thrilling 20-19 win at Franklin Pierce, handing the Ravens their first NE10 loss of the season. The win was a result of an 83-yard drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown as time expired. Franklin Pierce walked back into their locker room as Pace uttered “Nevermore.”

Pace will look to keep its perfect conference record untarnished as it returns home for a Week 9 matchup versus Bentley. The Falcons could beat the Setters, however, as they sport the best offense in the NE10.

This game is going to be full of tricks and treats - no doorbells necessary.

Assumption Drops Triple Digits On Post

Per our North/East Region expert Ava Curry, “That’s like crazy but possible.”

Considering Assumption averages under 35 points per game, I think Post is safe. However, Post is 0-7 this season and averages about 12 points per game. So, there is a chance this happens, but it would be one of the scariest things we’ve seen in a regular season conference game.

No. 21 Central Washington Is Upset By Winless Eastern New Mexico

A ranked team losing to a winless team is largely unheard of, but on Halloween, anything can happen.

Central Washington handed UT Permian Basin their second Lone Star (LSC) loss of the season in Week 8 as they downed the Falcons 42-13. In Week 9, the Wildcats head to Eastern New Mexico, a team that has tried its best to get into the win column but has failed each week.

ENMU racked up 623 yards of offense in Week 8 versus Western Oregon, yet fell 50-35. Despite a 15-point lead at halftime, the Greyhounds allowed 21 unanswered points in the final 15 minutes of possession, ultimately sealing their fate.

Maybe the Greyhounds can perform a little bit of magic and pull out a win on Halloween. Tune in to the Central Washington vs. Eastern New Mexico matchup live on FloCollege on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. PT.
