Week 7 of D2 football brought plenty of excitement: No. 1 Ferris State extended its 37-game winning streak with an Anchor-Bone Classic win at Grand Valley State, two undefeated teams squared off with only one remaining perfect, and several teams made their cases for postseason play.

Each week, we learn more about the true talent of D2 football teams, their discipline and the opponents standing in their way. Week 7 was no exception. Here’s what we learned from another packed Saturday of Division II football.
Grand Valley State Is Better Than Its 5-2 Record Suggests
If you score 17 unanswered points against No. 1 Ferris State Football, you deserve to be talked about.
Then-No. 13 Grand Valley State jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, capitalizing on two Ferris State fumbles and controlling possession early. But Ferris State flipped the momentum in the second quarter.
Freshman Bill Brown intercepted Andrew Schuster, setting up a short Ferris State touchdown drive that cut the GVSU lead to 17-14. The Bulldogs later tied the game with a field goal before recovering a GVSU fumble and adding another field goal to take a 20-17 lead into halftime.
Despite the 41-34 loss, GVSU is still an extremely talented team, and its two losses have been decided by just 13 combined points. The Lakers have one of the most productive offenses in Division II and showed Saturday that they can go toe-to-toe with the top-ranked team in the country.
D2 Felt The Impact Of West Florida’s Move To Division I
West Florida began its transition from NCAA Division II to Division I at the start of the 2026-27 athletic year. The Argonauts joined the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) as a full multi-sport member and the United Athletic Conference (UAC) as a football-playing affiliate after previously competing in the Gulf South Conference (GSC).
The move gives West Florida a chance to compete at the Division I level, but it also removed one of the Gulf South Conference’s traditional powers from the Division II landscape.
Week 7 offered a reminder of the impact. No. 21 West Alabama traveled to Pensacola and suffered a 37-3 loss to its former GSC opponent.
The Argonauts dominated the Tigers, limiting West Alabama to six first downs, 29 total yards, -16 rushing yards and an 0-for-13 mark on third down. The Tigers remained scoreless until Elijah Guyton connected on a 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
CSU Pueblo Is A Major Threat
We knew that CSU Pueblo was good. After all, the ThunderWolves have been in our top five since the preseason. In Week 7, they emphasized that point.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the ThunderWolves rolled past RMAC opponent New Mexico Highlands 77-17.
The Homecoming win improved CSU Pueblo to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play while extending several impressive streaks. The Pack has now won 30 consecutive RMAC games, the longest active conference winning streak in Division II football, and improved to 18-0 in Homecoming games since the program was rebooted in 2008.
CSU Pueblo piled up 616 yards of offense, including 370 through the air and 246 on the ground, while recording 31 first downs. The ThunderWolves averaged 8.3 yards per play and converted 10 of 13 third downs.
No. 4 CSU Pueblo has established itself as one of the teams to watch in the national championship race. If the ThunderWolves continue playing at this level, they could be a serious problem for anyone they meet in the postseason.
