Monmouth Holds Off Towson For Memorable 41-40 Homecoming Win

The Towson football team is having a tough season. It was homecoming at Monmouth. The hosts had never beaten the Tigers at home.

Emotions were running high, and that ultimately is what settled the back-and-forth battle between the hopeful Coastal Athletic Association teams that are going in different directions this year, and a missed extra point by Towson in the final minutes was the difference, allowing the Hawks to escape with a 41-40 victory.

It was the 13th meeting between the two teams, with Towson entering with a 9-3 advantage in the series, including a 6-0 record West Branch, New Jersey, while Monmouth won last year’s meeting in Maryland (42-31).

With the win Saturday, the Hawks improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in CAA action, while the Tigers fall to 0-6 and 0-2, respectively.

Final Recap From 41-40 Monmouth Win Over Towson

Monmouth struck first against Towson with a statement touchdown just over a minute into their showdown Saturday, but the Tigers responded a few minutes later.

However, Towson kicker Zaydaan Faridi missed the extra point, which offered a bit of foreshadowing for the emotional contest.

Towson led 20-17 at halftime, and the game was knotted at 27 after three quarters.

The momentum-shifting moment came early in the final period, when freshman defensive back Amori McNeil intercepted an Andrew Indorf pass and returned it 71 yards to give Monmouth the lead and inject the energy back into the MU sideline.

The teams exchanged scores through the fourth quarter, but it was penalties that played the biggest role in the final minutes.

Two roughing-the-passer penalties helped Towson march down the field, and the drive ended with a Hail Mary pass from Indorf that was deflected and secured by redshirt sophomore wide receiver Cleveland Charlton.

Unfortunately, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Towson after the score pushed the extra-point attempt back 15 yards and took the 2-point conversion out of play.

Faridi missed the 36-yard kick and left the Tigers trailing with just over a minute remaining in the game.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from the Tigers on the ensuing Monmouth drive gave the Hawks the first down they needed to be able to run out the clock and secure the win.

Monmouth had 416 yards of total offense in the win, including an 18-for-27, 218-yard, three-touchdown passing performance from redshirt sophomore quarterback Frankie Weaver.

The MU defense helped make sure the Hawks didn’t pay the price for their 12 penalties and 120 penalty yards. Monmouth had the pick-six, four sacks and five tackles for a loss.

Monmouth did allow 375 total yards, but kept the Towson running game to just 96 yards.

Through the air, Indorf was 21 for 35 for 279 yards and four touchdown passes, with redshirt sophomore wide receiver Aaron Enterline catching six passes for 154 yards and a score.

Both teams were strong under pressure, with each going 2 for 2 on fourth-down attempts and both turning in perfect efforts in the red zone – 6 for 6 for Towson and 5 for 5 for Monmouth.

Towson entered the game at Kevin Callahan Field at Kessler Stadium with a perfect record against the Hawks in New Jersey (6-0) and a 9-3 advantage in their all-time series, though the Tigers had not yet found the win column in 2026.

Monmouth, on the other hand, needed a win this week to stay perfect in conference play and sit atop the CAA standings at 3-0, since Campbell, the other 2-0 program, has a nonconference game this week.

Up next for Towson is an Oct. 10 visit from Stony Brook, while Monmouth heads into a bye week, before traveling to face New Hampshire on Oct. 17.
