Wingate and Delta State both started off their 2026 season with losses in Week 0.
Wingate fell short to UNC Pembroke, 21-13. The Bulldogs headed into halftime with 13 points to Pembroke's 0, but couldn't make it to the red zone in the second half. UNC Pembroke took over in the second half, scored a touchdown in the third quarter, and then two more in the fourth.
Delta State took a massive loss after being shut out by Northeastern State University 52-0. NSU racked up 24 points in the first half and continued their scoring with 28 more points in the second half.
Delta State holds a secret weapon: a Power 4 transfer from LSU. Emile Picarella started his collegiate career at LSU, the transfered to NSU after his freshman year. He made his collegiate debut in the shutout in Week 0, but now that the gloves are dusted off, he can be sure to help the team against Wingate.
Wingate was the favorite in the South Atlantic preseason poll, but the question stands of whether they will live up to their predicted rankings.
