URI Rams vs. Stony Brook Seawolves: What to Expect?

The CAA preseason rankings are out, and the top 5 spots will be hotly contested throughout the season. The University of Rhode Island holds the No. 1 spot, while Stony Brook rounds out the top 5. 

Out of the 13 coaches in the CAA, 12 coaches voted for URI to win the conference. Stony Brook was the other team to earn a first-place vote. While that vote probably came from the URI coach, Jim Fleming, himself, we wonder what Coach Fleming sees in the Seawolves and Coach Billy Cosh. 

This comes after their dominant season in 2025, going undefeated in conference play. Booking their ticket to the 2025 FCS Tournament, they fought their way to the second-round game, coming up short to UC Davis. The Rams ended their season with a record of 11-3. 

Finishing 8th in the CAA, the Seawolves did not have their best showing in 2025; they are sure to move themselves up in the rankings in 2026. Since their 8th-place finish in 2025 and 6th-place finish in 2024, several teams have transferred conferences, including Villanova and William & Mary, who left after the 2025 season. 

Stony Brook and URI have received multiple transfers over the last couple of years and are ready to rep their new CAA jersey for what will be an intense season.
