It's fall camp season as teams across Division 2 open regular practice ahead of the 2026 campaign. NCAA changed its preseason practice rules in recent years, allowing D2 programs to begin fall camp based on either their season opener or the start of the academic year, whichever comes first.

Can Pitt State Rebuild Its Defense Before Ferris State?
We've already covered Pittsburg State a bit this offseason, but the biggest question entering fall camp is how quickly the Gorillas can bring together a rebuilt defense before opening the season against defending national champion Ferris State.
What To Know:
- Pitt State opened fall camp on Monday, Aug. 3.
- The Gorillas return only three defensive starters.
- PSU added at least 16 defensive players in the offseason, including 11 recruits and five transfers from schools like Central Oklahoma, Missouri State and Winona State.
- Redshirt senior defensive end Ely Wilcox earned preseason All-MIAA honorable mention.
Takeaway:
Camp won't bring back last year's starters, but it'll determine how quickly Pitt State's new defensive pieces come together before one of the toughest openers in D2 football.
Who Is Harding's QB Under Roddy Mote?
Harding is in a moment of transition, as Roddy Mote succeeds Paul Simmons, who will remain with the program. After winning a national championship in 2023, the Bisons have lost to the eventual champion the last two years, in the quarterfinals in 2024 and in the final last year. Ferris State won both titles. Still, Harding will be expected to continue to compete at a high level.
What To Know:
- Quarterback Cole Keylon graduated last season.
- Replacing a four-year starting quarterback is challenging on any offense, but it's especially significant in Harding's flexbone triple-option, where the quarterback's decision-making is central to the system's success.
- Harding didn't bring a quarterback to GAC Media Day, instead featuring Andrew Miller, leaving the starting job one of camp's biggest questions.
- Will Roddy Mote make any offensive strategy changes?
Takeaway:
The quarterback position battle could be one of the most important camp competitions in D2. Whoever wins the job will inherit the keys to one of the nation's most successful offenses. We'll see if Mote offers more as camp goes on.
GVSU's Roster Continuity
Grand Valley State enters camp with one of the most experienced rosters among Division 2 contenders. They return quite a few starters from last season's team.
What To Know:
- GVSU returns 14 of 22 starters, with seven on offense and seven on defense.
- Andrew Schuster returns as the starting quarterback after throwing for 2,561 yards and 22 touchdowns.
- The Lakers also added seven experienced transfers to complement their roster.
- One notable addition is new offensive coordinator Eli Reinhart, who most recently was the head coach at Hutto High School in Texas after previous stops at Ferris State, Saginaw Valley State and Northwood.
Takeaway:
Wooster puts it better than anyone: "We have a great blend of returnees that have seen a significant amount of action throughout their careers, with a group of transfers that we feel will fill the voids of what we needed on both sides of the ball."
