Two of the best Division II teams of the last decade battled for the Gulf South title & playoff spot, with Valdosta State beating West Florida 47-44 in OT.

Regardless of how the first nine games of the season went for Valdosta State and the University of West Florida, two of the strongest programs in NCAA Division II football over the last decade, no one should be surprised by the intense battle that decided the 2025 Gulf South Conference title on Saturday.

And now, Valdosta State is headed back to the playoffs after a 47-44 win over UWF at PenAir Field in Pensacola, Florida, that ended with a 37-yard overtime field goal.

The win locked up a third-consecutive GSC championship for the Blazers, along with an unlikely spot in the postseason bracket, in the first year of Division II conference champions earning automatic berths.

West Florida (9-1, 2-1) entered the game as one of five undefeated teams at the Division II level, looking to win the Gulf South title outright for the first time after being the co-champion in 2021 and 2022, and hoping to hold on to a No. 1 seed for the playoffs, which start next weekend. 

Valdosta State was 3-4 heading into November and the first of its three conference games, but had clawed its way back to 5-4.

The unranked, unrecognized and almost-forgotten Blazers (6-4, 3-0) caught fire at the right time, winning all three GSC contests to claim their record 12th conference title and continue their quest for postseason redemption. VSU reached the Division II title tilt in 2024 but fell to Ferris State, 49-14.

The back-and-forth battle between VSU and UWF on Saturday saw the Argos jump out to a 13-0 lead, before a blocked extra point attempt allowed Valdosta State to put two points on the board and swing the momentum.

A few minutes later, after two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the second quarter, Valdosta State was leading 16-13. 

West Florida clung to a 30-23 halftime advantage in the quarterback dual between UWF’s Marcus Stokes and VSU’s Jameson Holcomb, but the game ultimately came down to the kickers.

In overtime, West Florida’s freshman kicker Brogan Woeber missed from 43 yards, allowing Valdosta State to win the game on its first possession. Fellow freshman Matt Rolader got the job done. It was his only field goal attempt of the game. Woeber was 1 for 4, with one blocked.

Holcomb finished the game 20 for 37 for 331 yards and four touchdowns. He threw one interception and was sacked twice. Stokes was 22 of 45 for 339 yards and five touchdowns. He also threw an interception and was sacked two times. 

To reach the top of the GSC standings, Valdosta State picked up wins against West Alabama (45-35) and Delta State (27-23), both of which were ranked in the top 25 at the time, before traveling to West Florida for the regular-season finale. 

West Florida, which shared the Gulf South title with Valdosta State in 2021 and Delta State in 2022, had wins over West Alabama (23-16) and Delta State (51-38), was ranked fourth in the latest FloCollege D2 Football Rankings and in the top spot among the 10 teams in the recent Super Region 2 rankings. 

Despite the loss, West Florida should be assured a spot in the playoff bracket, but the teams won’t know where they’re headed until the Division II Selection Show on Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern.

Saturday’s showdown was the 10th meeting in history between the two programs, and Valdosta State now leads the series 7-3, including victories in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

As they saw the last time they got a new head coach, there were some struggles during the transition for the Blazers, and VSU essentially dropped off the radar under Graham Craig – until the start of conference play. 

The Argos, the 2019 Division II national champions, overcame almost 100 penalty yards per game to remain undefeated, while the UWF defense entered the finale as the No. 1 rush defense in Division II football, giving up just 43.8 yards per contest. 

On Saturday, West Florida surrendered 60 yards on eight penalties, and the rush defense again was stellar. The Argos held the Blazers to -1 yard on the ground in the first half and 95 yards overall, part of a 426-yard day for VSU.

The West Florida offense was a little more balanced, collecting 339 yards through the air and 183 on the ground for a 522-yard total. 

So how is it that a 3-0 record is enough for a conference title and automatic playoff berth?

Simply enough, the updated structure and qualifying rules for the Division II postseason mean each of the 16 conference champions gets a free pass into the playoffs, while the other 16 spots are determined by a selection committee. 

At least that’s the case for now, so for 2025, there will be more football ahead for the winner of the now four-team Gulf South Conference. 

But how did the mighty GSC go from eight teams in 2024 to just four in 2025?

The change in the Division II landscape that led to four teams leaving the Gulf South Conference was the return of football to Conference Carolinas for the first time since the 1974-1975 school year. 

At the end of the 2024 campaign, Chowan, Erskine, North Greenville and Mississippi College left the GSC. The first three now reside in Conference Carolinas, while the MC program is defunct. 

Since 2000, three of the four programs left in the Gulf South Conference have played for the Division II national title a combined 11 times, winning six. Valdosta State claimed the trophy four times, while Delta State and West Florida each have one.

About Valdosta State Football

For the most part, Valdosta State has been consistently successful, including Division II national championships in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2018, along with runner-up finishes in 2002, 2021 and 2024.

VSU has made 21 appearances in the Division II Playoffs and owns a 34-16 record.

The Blazers also own a record 11 Gulf South Conference titles and have won or shared five since 2018.

Unfortunately, since COVID-19 canceled the 2020 season, VSU has struggled a little bit with transition.

When Tremaine Jackson took over the program for the 2022 campaign, after going 12-2 and reaching the title tilt in 2021, the Blazers stumbled to a 5-6 effort and sixth-place conference finish. 

They did rebound, however, going 25-3 over the next two seasons, including a pair of conference championships.

In 2025, with the much smaller GSC roster, Valdosta State has the opportunity to overcome the transition blues and make a huge turnaround all in the same season. 

This year, the Blazers are being led by first-year head coach Graham Craig, who was the offensive coordinator for the team’s run to the title game in 2024. 

With just four of its 22 starters back from a year ago, the squad’s 3-4 start certainly was understandable. The surge since, which started with a 35-24 win over North Greenville on Oct. 25, is coming at just the right time.

But do the Blazers have enough firepower left to get past a dominant West Florida team and earn an opportunity to avenge their 49-14 loss to Ferris State in last year’s championship game?

Valdosta State Sweeps GSC Weekly Awards

Valdosta State may have been unnoticed for much of the 2025 college football season, but the Blazers are stealing the spotlight late in the campaign. 

About West Florida Football

The West Florida Argonauts, who debuted in 2016, have not been just a flash in the pan. UWF is a perennial power.

Right now, there are five undefeated teams among the 25 programs ranked in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, and West Florida, 9-0, is one of them. With all the Argos have accomplished in such a short time, an undefeated season in 2025 would be their first. 

Another thing West Florida is trying to do is win a conference title outright for the first time. The Argos shared with Valdosta State in 2021 and Delta State in 2023. 

UWF, which is coming off a bye week, is outscoring its opponents this year 343-159 (38.11 to 17.67 per game), and the Argos scoring offense ranks 11th among Division II programs.

The Argos are in, or around, the top 10 in many statistical categories, but all that really matters it what it says in the win column. So far, they’ve done enough to be able to expect a playoff spot, regardless of what happens against Valdosta State, and that’s what is important.

One stat you won’t see on the leaderboard is that UWF’s nine wins this season have come across six states – Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Alabama and Mississippi. 

Last time out, West Florida went on the road to Delta State and opened a 14-3 first-quarter lead. The Argos gave up 21 points in the second quarter, but their offensive performance was consistent, and they cruised to a 51-38 victory. 

The last time West Florida beat Valdosta State was a 32-31 overtime nailbiter in 2022, the third consecutive win for the Argos in the series. Actually, their only three wins against VSU.
