The D2 football playoffs just expanded to 32 teams with automatic bids and no first-round byes. Here’s how the 2025 bracket would look today.

Make some room, the D2 playoffs just expanded, and the ride’s about to get crowded.

For years, 28 teams was the magic number. This season ushers in the most dramatic postseason shake-up in Division II history.

Automatic qualification is finally here. Every conference champion now gets a ticket. The field expands from 28 to 32 teams, with half the bracket made up of automatic bids and the other half at-large selections. 

And for the first time since 2004, no one gets a first-round bye.

That means parity and a full sprint to the finish. 

So if the playoffs started today, right now, here’s what the D2 football postseason would look like.
