After being shut out in the first two quarters of their in-state rivalry game with Bryant University on Friday, the Brown University Bears exploded for 29 second-half points and cruised to a 29-19 road win over the Bulldogs.

The 10-point margin of victory Friday at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island, put an end to the FCS’ longest active streak of games decided by one score. Since the first meeting between the teams in 2013, eight consecutive Brown-Bryant clashes have been won by eight points or less.

This year's game was the 10th contest between the Bears and Bulldogs, with Brown now owning a 7-3 advantage in the series. Bryant won their 2024 clash, 42-35.

The Bryant defense shined in the first half this time, recording four sacks and an interception to keep the Bears at bay, while the Bulldog offense hopped on the back of graduate running back Elijah Elliott, who had a 14-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 1-yard burst in the second.

Bryant had a missed extra point and a failed two-point conversion but went to the locker room at halftime with a 12-0 lead.

Brown wasted no time erasing the deficit when play resumed, scoring twice early in the third quarter, including a two-point conversion, to briefly take a 15-12 lead.

The Bulldogs answered as the third quarter came to a close, but they were silenced in the final 15 minutes. Brown added a pair of rushing touchdowns to retake the lead and put the final touches on the victory.

It was the second consecutive win for Brown over a CAA team from Rhode Island.

Last week, the Bears picked up an unforgettable 28-21 win over top-10 Rhode Island, the team’s first victory over a ranked opponent since 2009, first win over a top-10 team since 1981 and first triumph over the Rams since 2017.

In this week’s triumph, Brown was led by junior quarterback James Murphy, who was 29 for 44 for 347 yards and a touchdown, plus the interception in the first half. The touchdown pass was a 47-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver Trevor Foley, his only catch of the game and first career touchdown reception.

Sophomore running back Matt Childs led the Brown ground attack with 92 yards and two 1-yard touchdowns on 21 attempts. Senior running back Qwentin Brown added 50 yards and a touchdown of his own.

Brown had 460 total yards in the game – 347 through the air and 113 on the ground – while Bryant managed 350 total yards – 188 rushing and 162 passing.

No. 2 quarterback Jaden Keefner, a junior, was under center for Bryant, playing in place of sophomore Brennan Myer, who was seen on the sidelines in a sling, but without further explanation.

Myer played in the first five games of the Bulldogs’ season, but Keefner and Ridge Docekal played the entire time in Bryant’s 34-14 loss to Maine last week. They were a combined 10 for 25 for 99 yards passing in the loss.

On Friday, it was all Keefner, who was 16 for 27 for 162 yards. He threw for one touchdown, tossed one interception and fumbled one time.

The receiving corps for Bryant was quiet Friday, but Elliot’s performance on the ground included 116 net yards and the two touchdowns on 21 attempts.

With the win, Brown improves to 3-1 on the season, but the loss was a big one, as it came in conference play against Harvard, the favorite to win the Ivy League title this year and take the Ivy League’s first automatic bid for the FCS Playoffs.

This will be the leagues first opportunity to play in the postseason since opting out in 1945.

The Bears will continue their season Oct. 18 against Princeton with the first of six consecutive Ivy League contests.

Bryant falls to 2-5 overall this season and already is 0-3 in the Coastal Athletic Association, where the Bulldogs still are searching for their first win since joining the conference for the 2024 season. They’ve lost their first 11 CAA games across two campaigns.

Friday’s loss was the fourth consecutive for the Bulldogs, who have a week off before heading to the University of Rhode Island on Oct. 25 for their next CAA matchup.

About Brown University Football

The Brown University football team first stepped onto the gridiron in 1878 (still preceded by Princeton, Yale, Harvard and Penn), which was 121 years before the first Bryant squad officially took the field.

Despite being part of the Division I FCS scene, things always have been different in the Ivy League – until now.

In 1945, the Ivy League schools signed an agreement that took their teams out of the running for postseason participation, and that stayed true for nearly eight decades, until an effort led by the league’s student-athletes put an end to the holdout.

Beginning with the 2025 campaign, teams from the Ivy League are eligible for the FCS Playoffs, with the league champion being guaranteed a spot in the 24-team bracket. The other seven teams can earn an at-large bid, which makes every game on the schedule exponentially more important this year.

Harvard was picked to win the Ivy League crown this season, something Brown has done just four times, and not since 2008.

Harvard made light work of Brown earlier in the season, which leaves the Bears already playing catch up in the league standings. As of Oct. 6, all of the Ivy League teams have played one conference game. Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale are 1-0, while Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia and Cornell are 0-1.

Even though the Bears lost to Harvard and are 2-1 so far this season, their epic win over Rhode Island last week (28-21) earned them some respect and attention from the voters. That puts Brown one step closer to the top 25 and a shot at one of the 13 at-large bids – unless the team’s momentum can carry the Bears to the Ivy League title, of course.

The success against Rhode Island was Brown’s first triumph over the Rams since 2017, first victory over a ranked opponent since 2009 and first win over a top-10 team since 1981.

The performance led to Brown being named the Stats Perform National Team of the Week.

This week’s showdown with Bryant marks the last nonconference game of the year for Brown, which will close 2025 with six consecutive Ivy League matchups.

How Did Last Week Go For Brown University Football?

Brown picked up an unforgettable 28-21 win over top-10 Rhode Island last weekend, the team's first triumph over the Rams since 2017, first victory over a ranked opponent since 2009 and first win over a top-10 team since 1981.

The milestone performance led to Brown being named the Stats Perform National Team of the Week.

About Bryant Football

While the long history of the Brown football program can be summed up pretty succinctly, the short life of the Bryant program has more twists and turns than an Amtrak ride across the Northeast.

Bryant football debuted in 1999 and competed in Division II (Northeast-10 Conference), making playoff appearances in 2006 and 2007, losing both times.

When the school grew from Bryant College to Bryant University, the hopes for the football team also grew.

The 2008 season marked the team’s move to Division I and first opportunity to offer scholarships, along with a move to the Northeast Conference, where the Bulldogs remained through 2021.

Another move in 2022 saw Bryant head to the Big South Conference for the 2022 season and ultimately the Big South-OVC Football Association, which was the result of a merger between the Big South and the Ohio Valley Conference to help create a more competitive league schedule and allow the conference to offer an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs.

The announcement of Bryant’s move to the CAA came in August 2023, as the school again was looking to elevate its level of play.

In their first year of CAA action in 2024, the Bulldogs were 2-10 overall and 0-8 in conference play.

One of the wins came against Brown, as mentioned above, so maybe another triumph over the Bears this week would help Bryant’s confidence and lead to the team’s first CAA victory after 11 consecutive losses across two seasons.

Last week, the Bulldogs gave up 34 points to Maine in the first half, which was more than enough for the Black Bears to hold on for a 34-14 final score and spoil Bryant’s homecoming weekend. All of Bryant’s points came in the fourth quarter.
