Week 2 in the Lone Star Conference was full of action and saw four teams start conference play and in week three, all teams will play conference opponents. Despite leading the nation in passing yards, Connor Ackerley’s Western New Mexico Mustangs sit at 1-2.

Last week, Sul Ross struggled again against a Division I opponent, and now will face a Lonestar opponent in Western Oregon, still looking for their first win. Over in New Mexico, there was a quarterback battle for the ages, Ackerley faced West Texas A&M’s RJ Martinez, and the pair are no. 1 and no. 3 in total passing yards on the season in all of DII.

Ackerley threw for 324 yards and four touchdowns against the Buffs. Martinez led the Buffs to their first win of the season throwing for 388 yards and five touchdowns.

Angelo State is the only team sitting comfortably at 3-0, but the UT Permian Basin Falcons are also undefeated, they have played one less game.

Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico join Sul Ross as teams who are yet to win a game. As Midwestern State and Eastern New Mexico face off on Saturday, one of those teams will come away with their first win.

Here’s what to know ahead of week three.

LSC Football Players To Watch

Connor Ackerley, QB, Western New Mexico

The Western New Mexico QB is looking to light up another defense, this time in conference opponent Angelo State. Ackerley not only leads the conference in total offensive yards, but the nation with 1,080 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s only thrown one interception and completed 62% of his passes, but with a struggling defense, he can only do so much to lead the Mustangs and put points on the board.

RJ Martinez, QB, West Texas A&M

Martinez has been stellar under center for West Texas A&M, and is second in the conference with 924 yards and seven touchdowns, and is a true dual-threat presence, adding 173 rush yards and four touchdowns.

Chad Ragle, RB, Eastern New Mexico

Through three games, Ragle leads the conference in rush yards with 205 and has three touchdowns. The Eastern New Mexico running back has torn up opposing defenses and is looking to do the same against Midwestern State.

LSC Football Bold Predictions

UT Permian Basin takes the win over Texas A&M Kingsville. The Falcons have established their offense and defense and while the Javelinas have a strong offense, their defense often lacks. While the QB battle will be an elite one, this game will come down to the other factors and who can do the little things right.

Ackerly puts WNMU up early over Angelo State, but the Mustangs can’t hold on, giving up big plays to the Rams and struggle late. The Mustangs have shown that Ackerly can sling the pigskin, but their defense needs to be able to back up what their offense can do. While Angelo has not put up as dominant of numbers, they are a much more complete team and that’s what wins them games.

West Texas A&M and Central Washington will be a shootout. Two of the top scoring offenses in the conference, West Texas averages 39 points per game while Central Washington averages 29, but has played one less game. While the Buffs like to throw the ball, the Wildcats have shown a strong run offense, leaving this one up to who’s defense can get a stop first.

LSC Football Week 2 Scores

  • Sul Ross State 0, Stephen F. Austin 63
