UT Permian Basin (No. 3) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (No. 5) are neck and neck in the LSC standings. Their upcoming Sept. 20 matchup will be a fierce battle between two teams looking to secure their spot near the top. At A&M-Kingsville’s Javelina Stadium, the two teams will face off in LSC opening play. Here’s what to know before the game.

UT Permian Basin started the season hot with a 34-14 win over Central Oklahoma. The Falcons put the first points on the board with a touchdown in the first quarter, with Central Oklahoma’s answer not coming until the second. By the end of the third quarter, the Falcons had a hefty 17-point lead. The game set the bar high for following play and earned the spot of highest-ranked season opener in program history.

This is just one of the many accolades that have followed since Kris McCullough’s introduction as head coach in 2022. In McCullough’s first season (2023), the Falcons reached the LSC Championship for the first time. Last season, the Falcons tied for third in LSC regular-season play and recorded the second-winningest campaign in program history.

The Falcons’ second win (41-7) against Adams State marked their first back-to-back season-opening victories since McCullough became head coach and gives the team plenty of confidence entering future games.

Texas A&M-Kingsville also began the season with an impressive win, a 60-12 rout of Lincoln University at home. The Javelinas earned 48 points in the first half alone and blanked Lincoln in three of the four quarters. The team hadn’t reached a 60-point game since 2022, affirming the recent addition of first-year head coach Scott Parr.

In a hard-fought game against Northwest Missouri State, the Javelinas weren’t able to find a win. The second quarter was the deciding factor after NWMSU outgained the Javelinas (193-78) and put 14 points on the board that secured their lead for the rest of the game. The Javelinas had three or more turnovers in both of their first two games. However, they were also able to force turnovers from their opponents, highlighting their tight defense.

With both programs led by fresh head coaches and determined to prove their place at the top of the LSC, the Sept. 20 showdown is shaping up to be one of the most telling matchups of the early season. The outcome could help set the tone for the rest of conference play.
