GLIAC Football Week 2 Matchup Previews & Predictions:
A weekend full of GLIAC action kicks off on Saturday, Sept.13. These following matchups are streaming live on FloCollege, so be sure to tune in for all the action!
Southwest Baptist vs. Roosevelt
Roosevelt opened its 2025 season on Sept. 6, where the Lakers picked up a 23-21 win over Quincy. In a still young season, the Lakers are 1-0 heading into the Week 2 matchup.
In the victory over Quincy, Roosevelt scored in three of the four quarters and struggled defensively for a majority of the contest. Regardless, the Lakers game away with a Week 1 win that saw senior quarterback Zach Zella go 22-for-32 on completion for 221 yards and a touchdown.
Southwest Baptist heads on its first road contest of the 2025 season after a Week 1 loss at home to Missouri Southern, 38-31. The Bearcats are 0-1 in an early 2025 season and are on the hunt for a win in Week 2. In the loss to Southern Missouri, quarterback Jaron Saunders went 23-for-24 on pass completions for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Saunders also had one interception and was sacked twice in the loss.
The Bearcats and the Lakers are set to kickoff at 2:00pm ET.
St. Thomas (MI) vs. Northern Michigan
Northern Michigan is still looking for its first win as Week 2 football approaches. The Wildcats are back in the Superior Dome to host St. Thomas after a road loss in Week 1 to Northwood, 23-18.
The Wildcats are 0-2 heading into the contest against St.Thomas. In the road loss to Northwood, the offensive effort got off to a slow start after a scoreless first quarter. However, the Wildcats would not back down, piecing together 18 points in quarters two through four. The passing game was the ticket for the Wildcats and quarterback Duke Shovlad threw for 232 yards with one touchdown.
St. Thomas (MI) will head into the Week 2 contest 1-1 on the season and are hoping to bounce back after a loss to Idaho on Sept.6, 37-30. The Tommies scored at least once in every quarter of the loss and quarterback Andy Peters threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns.
The Wildcats and the Tommies will kickoff at 1:00pm ET on Sept. 13.
Tiffin University vs. Ferris State
All eyes are on Tiffin University and Ferris State in Week 2 of D2 football. In another week that saw Ferris State in the top spot of the D2 rankings by FloCollege, the Bulldogs will hope to stay undefeated on Sept. 13.
The Bulldogs head into the Week 2 matchup after a monstrous victory over Lake Erie on Sept. 6. The 63-6 victory saw well-roundedness from all sides of the football for the Bulldogs. Starting quarterback Wyatt Bower had a 55% passing percentage for 220 yards through the air and three touchdowns. The Bulldog defense also picked up two interceptions against the Storm offense.
The Dragons also head into the matchup against the Bulldogs after a huge win over Wayne State in Week 1, 34-7. In the victory of the Warriors, quarterback Alex Johnson was 22-for-28 for 253 yards and two touchdown passes on the day.
The Dragons and the Bulldogs will kickoff at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sept. 13.
Northwood University vs. Saginaw Valley State
The final GLIAC matchup of the weekend features Northwood University taking on Saginaw Valley State.
The Cardinals head into Week 2 with plenty of momentum after a win over Gannon on Sept. 6, 49-28. Even though Saginaw Valley State is 1-1 on the season, the offensive effort is still at an all time high for the Cardinals. In the victory over Gannon, quarterback Mason McKenzie was the all-around player for Saginaw Valley State. McKenzie was 11-for-14 on pass completions for 159 yards through the air and one touchdown toss. He also recorded 100 yards on the ground from the Cardinals.
Northwood University heads into the Axe Bowl 1-0 on the season after beating fellow GLIAC member Northern Michigan on Sept. 6, 23-18. The Timberwolves head to Saginaw Valley State for its first road test of the year and are hoping to continue the momentum from Week 1. In the victory over the Wildcats, Ethan Hamby went 10-for-19 on pass completions for 130 yards. Kicker Drew Cady managed 11 of the TimberWolves 23 points going 3-for-3 on field goals and two extra points.
The Timberwolves and the Cardinals are set to kickoff in the Axe Bowl at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sept. 13.
Week 2 GLIAC Football Predictions
Like all NCAA D2 football games, it is mostly a toss-up until the clock runs out, but here are some predictions for how these four GLIAC matchups will shape up in Week 2.
Roosevelt has the momentum and the home crown on its side in the matchup against Southwest Baptist. While the game may be close, Roosevelt should open the home schedule with a win on Sept. 13.
It is time for the ball to fall in favor of the Wildcats. With both teams in that matchup coming in with one-score losses in their most previous contest, it truly is anyone’s ball game. The Northern Michigan home crowd and atmosphere may be enough to propel the Wildcats to their first victory in what will be a tight D2 football contest the whole way through.
Ferris State is ranked No.1 for a reason. The Bulldogs have dominated each opponent they have faced all season and this weekend should be no different. The Bulldogs should be to no one’s surprise 3-0 after the game with the Dragons on Sept. 13.
Last but certainly not least, Saginaw Valley State and Northwood might be the biggest question mark in the GLIAC for Week 2. With a Cardinals team that relied on its quarterback and a Timberwolves team that relied on special teams in the most recent matchups, it could be either a high scoring game or a defensive battle until the end. Saginaw Valley State should come away 2-1 after the contest against the Timberwolves, but this could be a matchup that sees overtime on Sept.13.
