Week 2 of NCAA college football is quickly approaching, and with the FloCollege D2 rankings out to the public, there is a lot to be learned from how the Top 25 stack up.

FloCollege is the home of NCAA Division II college, and with that in mind, FloSports decided to launch its first weekly NCAA Football poll. The rankings are released every Tuesday after the ballots from a select group of pollster submit their ballots. Here's what we learned from the latest top 25 after chatting with FloCollege D2 Football rankings editor R.R. Ellis.

The Top Dog..Literally

In the opening weeks of the football season, the theme of dominance reigns true with one team in the ranks. Ferris State has consistently claimed the top spot since the preseason rankings way back on Aug. 28.

With this week’s trends showing the same pattern, the biggest question of the week is “How long can the Bulldogs hold on to the top spot and what keeps them there week after week?”

I think Ferris State is the king until they are knocked off the hill. Coach Tony Annese has shown time and time again he can reload like almost no one in D2 football. We saw this past weekend that Wyatt Bower is settling into his role as starting QB, but we also saw one of the backups, Chase Carter, score 4 TDs. That’s without even mentioning Carson Gulker. -Ryan Ellis

You can’t beat sound logic or statistics and for the Bulldogs, their matchup against Tiffin University will prove to be another test for the current king. While Ferris State holds a 2-0 record on a young 2025 campaign, Tiffin comes in 1-0 after a very convincing win over Wayne State, 34-7 on Sept. 4. Dubbed to finish second in the GMAC preseason pool, the Dragons will look to upset the Bulldogs in Week 2.

Spots 2 & 3

The two and three spots in the Top 25 have also held up in the early weeks of the 2025 season. With Harding comfortably holding on to the second spot and Grand Valley State holding on to third, the top three teams have exhibited nothing but high class talent and convincing wins thus far. While GVSU struggled with Black Hills State, the Lakers still came away victorious 48-36 and continued with a 2-0 record.

Harding opened its season on the road Sept. 6 and took a commanding victory over Northwestern Oklahoma, 49-7. The Bison started the season 1-0 overall and in GAC play, but with a potential victory over Southwestern Oklahoma on the horizon, could Harding have enough power to jump No.1-ranked Ferris State?

I think for now Ferris has the top, but Harding looks formidable. Harding famously runs the triple-option, and their rushing attacks are nearly unstoppable. This week was their first game and they dropped 484 rushing yards and 6 rushing TDs. -Ryan Ellis

The Shakeup in Spots 4-11

If you were looking for consistency in the rankings or hoped your team stayed where they were last week, chances are that it did not happen this week. The changing in spots 4-11 was intense to say the least. With Virginia Union plummeting to No. 10 after being ranked in the top 5 in Week 1, to Kuztown climbing into the top ten, this shakeup can teach us a lot.

First, West Florida, who was previously ranked sixth, climbs to number four. The Argonauts traveled to Kentucky Wesleyan on Sept. 6 and came away with a 28-7 victory, much to the surprise of those who expected it to be a blowout after the first 14 points came in the first four minutes. The Argos are now 2-0 on the season as they host Shorter at PenAir Field on Sept. 13.

Slippery Rock drops to number five this week, but with opening the season with a 24-13 victory over Franklin Pierce, the drop is not surprising. The Rock opens its home season with Shepherd University on Saturday, Sept. 13.

Some movement in spots six through eight saw three D2 schools rise from their spots in Week 1. Angelo State, previously ranked eighth, jumped up to sixth in this week's rankings. The Rams find themselves two spots up after dominating Emporia State, 41-20, to open their home schedule. The Rams open LSC play on Sept. 13 at Eastern New Mexico. Minnesota State, previously ranked tenth, sits seventh after the Week 2 rankings were released. The Mavericks moved up after a hefty win over Minot State, 34-16.

Kuztown takes the biggest jump after being ranked 11th in the Week 1 rankings. The Golden Bears solidified a spot in the top-ten, No.8, after a huge season opener victory over Assumption, 51-14. The Golden Bears tallied 482 yards of offense against the Greyhounds and quarterback Judd Novak was 11-for-20 with 233 yards and two touchdowns. Western Colorado did not change in the Week 2 rankings, holding strong at No.9.

The biggest drop in the D2 rankings this week was Virginia Union, previously ranked fifth, dropping all the way to No. 10. While still in the top 10, the Panthers have not played a game since Aug. 31, which would solidify a drop due to a lack of competition. Valdosta State also dropped in the rankings, moving from seventh to 11. The Blazers suffered their first loss in their 2025 campaign, 28-16, to Johnson C. Smith

The Rest Of The Top 25 & The Newbies On The Rise

The rest of the Top 25 is also shaken up. With schools like UTPB, West Alabama and Michigan Tech all finding a home in the top-15 and five teams who have never been ranked in the top-25, Week 1 brought lots of changes to the D2 football landscape.

One of the most impressive jumps in the lower half of the Top 25 is Michigan Tech. Previously ranked 24th, the Huskies find themselves in 15th in this week's rankings. Officially 2-0 on the season and after a beatdown of South Dakota Mines, 45-9, this jump into the top-15 should surprise no one. Michigan Tech tallied 421 yards of offense and starting quarterback Alex Bueno was 17-for-26 with 151 yards, two touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

The biggest talking point of this week's rankings, though, is how five non-ranked schools found their way into the Top 25.  Delta State (No.16), MSU Moorhead (No. 18), Augustana (SD) (No. 20), Minnesota Duluth (No. 21,) and Carson-Newman (No. 25), all have never been ranked heading into this week’s rankings. After each team has picked up some big wins, is their time in the Top 25 a fluke or will they hang around for a little while?

It’s going to fluctuate weekly, but Augustana probably should’ve been in the Top 25 to start the season. They have looked very strong. MSU Moorhead is buoyed by the best D2 quarterback currently, in Jack Strand, and while he’s on the field, he gives them a chance. Delta State have won two games convincingly, including their season opener against Central Missouri. -Ryan Ellis

On The Outside Looking In: The Schools Receiving Votes

Last, but certainly not least, in our what you should take away from the D2 FloCollege rankings, are those schools considered on the outside looking in. Otherwise known as the receiving votes schools.

With schools like Emory & Henry, Ouachita Baptist, Colorado School of Mines, Texas A&M Kingsville, Wingate, and Pittsburg State to name a few, all receiving votes in Week 2, what is it going to take for these schools to find a spot in the Top 25 in Week 3 or the weeks to come?

Emory & Henry and Texas A&M Kingsville seem to be the top two contenders for a Top 25 spot, but with conference play starting for Emory & Henry in the SAC and Kingsville in their final non-conference game; the pressure is on for the Wasps and Javelinas.

Emory & Henry has looked strong early. They have a conference game this week against No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne, and if they can win, they’ll almost certainly be in the Top 25. A&M Kingsville played their first game and looked strong. In fact, the Lone Star Conference looks exceptionally strong right now. -Ryan Ellis

It’s A Long Season, But Are Things Holding Up?

With many weeks left to play in NCAA D2 football, talks of a national championship are happening always and Ferris State looks to be in the prime spot to claim the title based on the rankings, but are these ranking holding up to pre-set expectations or are there still plenty of early-season shakeups to be had.

From the preseason rankings, to now, it looks like things are still going according to the game plan set at the beginning of the season, however, Ryan Ellis said it best.

The Preseason Top 10 has essentially held up with the exception of Central Oklahoma and Valdosta. Nearly every one of these teams will look rusty at the start of the season, but it’s a long way to November. -Ryan Ellis

With all of the D2 action to come and Week 3 rankings on the horizon, these are the top takeaways and things to note heading into Week 2. Be sure to watch NCAA D2 football live on FloCollege this season and see how the best of the best in the Top 25 pan out.
