The Mount Union Purple Raiders kicked off their 2025 campaign against the Wheaton College (IL) Thunder on Saturday, Sept. 6 at home in Alliance, Ohio and did not disappoint fans with a game that stayed hot the entire afternoon.

The Purple Raiders ultimately took a 37-29 win over the Thunder as freshman quarterback Mikey Maloney passed for five touchdowns.

Mount Union had some lofty expectations heading into the season, as the Purple Raiders were picked as the No. 1 contender for the OAC title by the Football Preseason Coaches Poll and ranked second in the preseason by D3Football.com, and showed off their high level of efficiency and intensity on Saturday. Mount Union entered halftime with a 27-7 lead after it scored three touchdowns in the first quarter alone.

However, Wheaton would not let Mount Union sit comfortably in the lead, as senior quarterback Mark Forcucci sailed two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 37-29.

The last-minute effort to stay in the game would not be enough, and Mount Union took home the win.
