Sul Ross State is the only team not playing this week, taking a much-needed bye to regroup after falling to UTRGV 66-0 in the Vaqueros' inaugural football game.
UT Permian Basin is fresh off a big upset, taking down No. 5 Central Oklahoma 34-14. Central Washington also had a big win, taking down Colorado Mesa 41-14.
After their big win, Central Washington is taking on FCS giant and No. 9 Montana in Missoula, looking to make a big statement before starting Lone Star Conference play.
Here are some of the biggest games to catch in the Lone Star Conference this week, some important names to know, and some predictions.
Biggest Games Of The Week In LSC Football
Colorado School of Mines at West Texas A&M – Thu. Sep 4 – 7:00 p.m. CT
Returning home for their first home game of the season, the Buffs are looking to avenge their week zero loss with a win, facing another solid opponent. Mines is opening its season in Canyon, looking to follow up on its 8-3 2024 outing.
UT Permian Basin vs Adams State – Sat. Sep 6 – 7:00 p.m. CT
The Falcons are going on the road after their huge upset win over Central Oklahoma, where starting quarterback Kanon Gibson accounted for 267 of UT Permian Basin’s yards, with 189 of those yards coming in the air.
Looking to prove themselves as a force in DII football, the Falcons are looking to head into Alamosa Co, looking to start the season 2-0.
Lincoln (CA) vs Texas A&M Kingsville – Sat. Sep 6 – 7:00 p.m. CT
The Javelinas are starting a new era in Kingsville, with new head coach Scott Parr leading his team onto the field for the first time. The team has garnered lots of excitement, with a new head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback all from DI FBS schools.
No. 8 Western Colorado vs Midwestern State – Sat. Sep 6 – 7:00 p.m. CT
Though the Mustangs fell in their week one matchup on the road at Missouri Southern, they had several positives, including quarterback Jakolby Longino, who threw for 359 yards and one touchdown while adding another score on the ground. Though Western Colorado is a ranked opponent, Midwestern State is hungry to win its first game of the season, and the setting is just right.
Returning home after a loss to play in week one could bring a perfect storm for Midwestern State football to pull off the upset.
LSC Football Players To Watch
Kennedy McGill – QB – Central Washington
In week zero, McGill accounted for 325 total yards of offense and four touchdowns, two on the ground and two in the air, as Central Washington put up 516 total yards of offense on Colorado Mesa. Now, as the Wolves head to Missoula to take on FCS giant No. 9 Montana, McGill is looking to show his talent against a solid DI opponent.
Jakolby Longino – QB – Midwestern State
In the loss to Missouri Southern, Longino, a transfer from Lamar, threw for 359 yards and one touchdown, leading all LSC quarterbacks. This week, he’s looking to lead Midwestern State to a win against No. 8 Western Colorado.
Deuce Zimmerman – WR – Western New Mexico
Zimmerman, the star wide receiver for the Mustangs, caught five passes for 115 yards and one touchdown with his longest reception of 74 yards. Zimmerman has the ability to change a game, and he did exactly that against Adams State, helping the Mustangs come back from a 14-point deficit.
Marquis Brown – DB – Angelo State
Brown led the Lone Star Conference in tackles in week 0 with 13, including two tackles for loss, and had one interception. Leading the Rams’ defense to a 28-7 win over Fort Hays State on the road, Brown is looking to continue making the Angelo State secondary a no-fly zone in week two against Emporia State.
