The reigning CAA champions Rhode Island Rams started their 2025 season against the Campbell Camels, needing all four quarters to pull out the 31-20 win.

Armed with a strong group of returners, the Rams are looking to use their second-round playoff loss as motivation and have an even better year in 2025. With quarterback Devin Farrell and wide receiver Marquis Buchanan, the offense has two of its best weapons returning. AJ Pena, a linebacker who was an All-American as a junior, was picked to win CAA Defensive Player of the year and was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Offensive lineman Brock Bethea, Buchanan and Pena have all been named Preseason All-Americans.

Farrell and Buchanan led the way for Rhode Island with big plays down the stretch, leading Rhode Island to the win. Campbell had a strong showing, with quarterback Kamden Sixkiller leading the way for the Camels, keeping them in this game.

See how the action unfolded here, with the most recent updates at the top.

Final, Rhode Island Wins 31-20

Ending the game in victory formation, the Rams needed all four quarters to win this one. Turnovers plagued the Rams in the first half and Campbell took advantage. Rhode Island picked up some much-needed momentum in the fourth quarter, propelling them to the win, starting the 2025 season 1-0.

Rhode Island Takes Over

After converting the big fourth down, the Camels were unable to keep the ball moving and turn the ball over on downs. Rhode Island takes over with 1:17 to go.

Campbell Monster Fourth Down Conversion

Forced back to almost their own goal line, the Camels converted a monster fourth down just after the two minute timeout.

Rams Stop Campbell On Fourth Down

With the Camels knocking on the door, looking to cut into Rhode Island's lead. The Rams defense came up big, forcing an incompletion on fourth and nine and now the offense will take over.

Marquis Buchanan Touchdown

On their first play after getting a stop, Farrell finds Buchanan, who evades one tackle and takes it to the house. Rhode Island leads 31-20 with 9:27 left to play.

Rhode Island Retakes The Lead

After the third down pass leaves Rhode Island on the half yard line, Littleton punches the ball in on fourth and goal, putting Rhode Island back on top for the first times since they led 7-0. Rhode Island leads 24-20.

Third Quarter Done

Rhode Island has the ball as the clock hit 0:00 on the third quarter and is knocking on the door. The Rams have 15 minutes left to stage a comeback and the Camels have 15 more minutes to hold on. Campbell leads 20-17.

Rhode Island Field Goal

Rhode Island kicker Garth White nails the field goal, bringing the score back within three. Campbell still leads 20-17.

Campbell Fumble

JJ Cowan fumbles and Rhode Island jumps on it, getting a much needed turnover and momentum shift.

Campbell Field Goal

After the Camels took over in Rhode Island territory from a shanked punt, Campbell drilled the long field goal and Alex Crabb put three more points on the board. Campbell leads 20-14.

Second Half Underway

Campbell returns the kick and Sixkiller is under center. Will necessary adjustments be made on both sides for both teams after the break?

Halftime

Turnovers are the story of the game so far for Rhode Island, and Campbell has benefited immensely. Rhode Island has 242 total yards of offense, double what Campbell has, but because of turnovers giving the Camels good field position, Campbell leads 17-14.

Rhode Island Touchdown

The Rams were looking at 3rd and nine deep in their own territory, Farrell connected over the top with Buchanan for a big gain, putting Rhode Island in the red zone. Aided by two pass interference calls in the end zone, Littleton punched in a touchdown, cutting the deficit to three. Campbell leads 17-14.

Campbell Adds Field Goal

The Rams are able to get an important stop, holding the Camels to a field goal. Campbell leads 17-7.

Another Rhode Island Fumble

On the kickoff return, Rhode Island fumbles the ball and Campbell recovered, once again getting the ball on a platter in the red zone.

Mike Chandler House Call

Mike Chandler takes the ball into the end zone himself, rushing in to put Campbell in the lead, 14-7.

End First Quarter

While the Rhode Island defense is dominating and Campbell has not picked up a first down from scrimmage, the Rams offense is struggling with some mental mistakes. One muffed punt and one fumble have handed the ball to Campbell on a platter and made this one a tie game after 15 minutes.

The Camels have been rotating their quarterbacks and running some trick plays, and while Sixkiller has seen most snaps, Mike Chandler has re-entered the game under center.

We're all tied up at 7-7 after one.

Rhode Island Fumble

Deep into the red zone, Rhode Island fumbles and Campbell recovers, taking over.

Campbell Ties It Up

The Camels run an out route to JJ Cowan, who was wide open in the end zone and walked Kamden Sixkiller's throw into the end zone. We're all tied up at 7 with 4:35 left in the first quarter.

Rhode Island Muffed Punt

The Rhode Island returner muffed the punt and Campbell comes up with the big recovery, getting the ball back at the Rhode Island four yard line.

Campbell Defense Comes Up Big

The Camels get a stop and Rhode Island misses a field goal, keeping the Rams from adding more to the board and taking over.

Campbell 3-and-Out

The Rams get the stop and a big punt return, and will take over just across midfield at the Campbell 49.

Rhode Island Touchdown

Devin Farrell finds a wide open Kevin Schaefer over the middle for a 31-yard touchdown on their fourth play from scrimmage, taking a 7-0 lead.

Game Start

Campbell kicks off the ball and Rhode Island will start at the 25.
